PREFACEth About the twilight of the 20 Century (second Millennium), global awareness that religion and culture are two cognate aspects of human existence posing precarious challenge to the world loomed largethe clash of religion and culture came to the front burner in global affairs as major threats to world peace. Again, UNESCO policies on culture, advocate the need for synergy between culture and development. These two factors rank high in popularizing and, bringing culture, religion and development together in the frontiers of knowledge foraging, in reputable institutions across the globe. Hence, it is a baseline periscopic crystal to fathom, understand and manage the value differences and worldviews which abound in the world. Accordingly, cultural studies have emerged as a major contributor to the development of critical thinking in scholarship and human endeavour. In the year 2001, the then Department of Religious Studies, University of Port Harcourt reviewed its Programme in line with the global trend of bringing the study of religion and culture together. So, the nomenclature of the department was therefore changed to Religious and Cultural studies, as obtainable in other universities in America, Europe, Canada, etc. Since then academics and students of the department have been working hard to explore, identify, develop and delineate the various areas of the new Programme. This book is therefore an attempt at contributing to the wealth of religious and cultural studies. In particular, it is a wake-up answer to the clarion call and yearning ofour students, desirous of ‘own texts’ in the new discipline and knowledge space, especially in the interplay between culture, religious change and development.
v
Furthermore, the importance of this study is anchored on the fact that we live in tumultuous times, and the world all around us seems to be in need of increased awareness, understanding, tolerance, and respect for cultural diversity and change. This is the intellectual nutrient contained herein. In closing, we acknowledge several intellectual debts to the authors whose works provided us the springboard, insight, patterns of crystallization, analysis and discussion of the subjects. In a special way, we wish to thank our colleagues for their contributions to the successful completion of the project. Immense thanks also go to our students whose consistent quest for the publication was a major motivating factor. Abdulrazaq O. Kilani Ngozi N. Iheanacho
