Description

The Pan African Anthropological Association (PAAA) marked the 10th anniversary of its creation by holding its 9th Annual Conference in Yaounde, Cameroon - the city and country of its birth, from 30 August-2 September 1999. The conference, themed "The Anthropology of Africa: Challenges for the 21st Century", was attended by some seventy participants, mostly African. Among the international participants was Dr Sydel Silverman, President of the Wenner Gren Foundation at the time, a long term partner of the PAAA who was present at the inaugural conference in 1988. The conference proceedings were initially published in 2000 with very limited circulation. Given the continued relevance of the papers presented, and in view of the call by the President of the PAAA for African anthropologists to reunite anthropological theory and practice in the teaching programmes of African universities, the PAAA has republished the proceedings of its landmark 9th Annual Conference. The book consists of forty three divided into eight parts, namely: teaching anthropology in the decades ahead; Health Challenges: HIV/AIDS Anthropological Perspectives; NGOS: Use and Misuse of Anthropology; Anthropological Focus on Environment; Some Applied Issues in Anthropology; The African Family in Crisis; Ethnicity and Ethnic Conflicts; and Population issues and anthropology: Fertility Crisis. Paul Nkwi concludes his introduction to the volume with these words: "The Anthropology of Africa will remain for a long time, fundamentally applied if it is to meet the challenges of the 21st Century."

Introduction st The Anthropology of Africa: Challenges for the 21 Century Paul Nchoji Nkwi Department of Sociology and Anthropology University of Yaoundé I, Cameroon The study of human diversity has fascinated social thinkers and driven the biological study of humankind to the brink of virtually asserting the discovery of God. Far from it. The Human Genome project testifies to the constant search for a better understanding of what we humans are. As a discipline, anthropology seeks to generate knowledge and build generalities about all human cultures and African peoples and cultures are no exception. The discipline has undergone significant changes in the last two decades and it is facing a number of challenges. The discipline has witnessed a rapid increase in the number of anthropologists engaged in cross-cultural development research work, acting as cultural brokers and seeking to integrate anthropological perspectives and methods in the planning and implementation of development projects. The main challenge is how to maintain this profile for many years to come by establishing a professional niche that will rehabilitate a discipline battered by colonialism. Given the nature of social transformation in Africa, the discourse on culture and development will linger on for many decades. Colonized and dominated by Western cultures, the process of neo-colonialism continues today in various forms. The educational system is basically Western, the visions are still Western, development perceptions are still Western. The whole discourse on how culture and development can become bed partners highlights the notion of how Western responses to biological needs can replaced by African responses. As long as Africa continues to transform its young socially through an education process that is not African, the emergence of an indigenous development, or development with an African face, is still many decades away. For years, the whole process of change or planned change known as development has advocated the understanding of the cultural underpinnings of human societies that would lead to practical action and policy. A diachronic analysis of culture and development has demonstrated that the 1920s and 1930s were dominated by functionalist paradigms and models which shaped ix
