Chapter 1- What is a Mental Magic Trick?
Magic is a concept that hasfascinated many people for centuries. The first written record of magic datesback to Ancient Greece in the 6th century B.C. and at that time was frownedupon because it was a form of sorcery that could not be explained. Since then, however, magic has developed into many things and today there are multipletypes of magic. One such type of magic is known as mentalism or mental magic. This is a type of performing art that consists of a magician or mentalistsappearing to have intuitive or psychic powers that allow them to read one’smind.

A mental magic trick is one in whicha magician utilizes these intuitive or psychic powers to convince an audiencethat he or she has performed an incredible feat. Mental tricks fall into one ofthe following categories: foreknowledge, mind control, memory feats, extrasensory perception, prophecy, and premonition. The most common type ofmental magic is when a magician appears to read the mind of an audience memberor accurately predicts something about an audience member without priorknowledge. These feats are called tricks for a reason, though, and most can beexplained through a fairly simple process but others require great skill.
One of the most important componentsof a mental magic trick is the performance style. There are essentially twooptions for magicians. They either claim to actually possess some of theaforementioned supernatural powers or they admit to being magicians who arehighly observant or skilled in specific areas of mental magic such as cardtricks or sleight of hand. Those who claim to have actual powers tend toperform grandiose feats of illusion while those who admit to being magiciansprefer a slightly more toned down style of performance. Either way, it isimportant that the performers are able to effectively draw in their audience.
A popular type of mental magicinvolves coin tricks. For instance, a magician might ask an audience member fora coin while already having a coin in his or her pocket that has been bentusing pliers or some other tool. The magician would then use a quick sleight ofhand trick to switch the two coins and place the bent coin firmly in theaudience member’s hand. After speaking to the crowd and encouraging theaudience member to image that they are bending the coin with their mind, themagician would then ask them to open their hand and reveal the bent coin. Avariety of other mental magic tricks involve coins as well.
Other mental magic tricks involvemathematics. These tricks involve asking audience members to pick any numberthen having them do some simple mathematics to get to a certain answer. Thesecret behind these tricks is that no matter what number the audience membershave chosen, they will always end up with the same final number. The magiciancan then predict the number itself or further the trick by asking audiencemembers to associate that number with a letter. Most people are able todetermine the secret behind mathematical mental magic if they put forth theeffort to solve the problem.
