Immigrants in Trump’s America

The election of President Donald Trump has placed the issue of immigration at the centre of debate in the U.S. He recently announced the deployment of 5,000 troops, with the possibility of more to follow, to the Mexican border (the same border where he promised to build a wall) in order to stop the caravan of migrants from Central America entering the country.

While the rules are changing for new migrants and asylum seekers, what is it like for those undocu- mented immigrants already living and working there? According to the Pew Research Center, nearly 2 out of  million immigrants in the country are undocu- mented. They have mostly lived in the United States for years and are very settled, representing 8% of the working population. Nevertheless,five days after coming to office, the American president signed a decree making all illegal immigrants the first priority for ICE, the immigration authority, without distinc- tion between the law abiding, the criminal, or those posing a threat to security.

However, they can count on the support of civil rights associations and lawyers who have pledged their sup- port. Civil society and politicians are also mobilising in their defence. A movement is gaining strength demanding the suppression of ICE’s powers, which has the support of high profile elected Democrats such as Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York. Plenty of undocumented immigrants still seem to believe, despite everything, in the American Dream.
