Description

THE NEW GLOBAL ORDER -- CHINA’S WAY TO GLOBAL POWER AND HOW TRUMP HAS REDRAWN THE TRANSATLANTIC RELATIONSHIP -- 2018 experienced many unexpected developments internationally. Old established alliances threatened to fall apart, while others formed. The transatlantic relationship took a bit of a beating. The unpredictable American president, Donald Trump, has never sought to hide his aversion to the European Union, seeing it as the commercial “enemy” of his country. Since his election, these feelings have been expressed in a series of strong measures, such as removing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord, and the establishment of steep tariffs on European aluminium and steel. When Washington withdrew from the Iranian Nuclear Deal, it was the last straw, ending the historically friendly alliance – and the very high profiled “bromance” between Macon and Trump in the media. The most recent upset in this turmoil is the downgrading, by the Trump administration, of the diplomatic status of the European Union to a mere international organisation.

A new world order?
2018 experienced many unexpected develop-ments internationally. Old established alliances threatened to fall apart, while others formed. The transatlantic relationship took a bit of a beating. The unpredictable American president, Donald Trump, has never sought to hide his aversion to the European Union, seeing it as the commercial“enemy” of his country. The most recent upset in this tur-moil is the downgrading, by the Trump adminis-tration, of the diplomatic status of the European Union to a mere international organisation.
And if there is someone set to gain from all this, it would be China’s president, Xi Jinping, who, since coming to power in 2013, has been work-ing steadfastly on China’s international profile. His “Belt and Road Initiative”, a series of rail, road and sea links between Asia, Europe and Africa has allowed him to forge new alliances and solidify his country’s economic power. Some European countries, offended by Donald Trump, are beginning to view Xi Jinping, with his mas-sive investment in infrastructure worldwide, as a new ally... Can China surpass its commercial rival, the United States?
