Europe goes to the polls
Between 3 and 6 May, over 350 million citizens, from the twenty-eight countries of the European Union, will vote to send their chosen representa-tives to the European Parliament. The election is held everyfive years, and this one is marked by a great unknown by the name of Brexit. At the time of writing, the U.K. is participating in the elections, even though that could be cancelled at any moment before 22 May if Theresa May manages to get her exit agreement ratified by the House of Commons.
These elections are ever more uncertain in other ways. Brexit saga aside, polls are indicating a pos sible seismic shift in the distribution of seats in the European Parliament. Analysts are predicting that the great coalition of the centre right (EPP group) and the centre left (S&D group), which currently dominates Parliament, could lose its overall majority for the first time in twentyfive years. The factional divisions of these political forces will benefit eurosceptic parties and the extreme right, but also, potentially, the Greens.
Extreme right wing parties such as: the German AfD, the National Rally in France, and the Broth ers of Italy (FdI), have worked hard to change their image in recent times often as a result of their female leaders. The objective? To seduce growing numbers of women to their cause, who could, potentially, lead these parties to victory this month. However, the Greens, currently enjoying an unprecedented rise in popularity in Germany, Holland and Luxembourg, are also capable of overturning the status quo.
