AMÉLIE ARA RÉDACTRICE EN CHEF
A Very British Departure Brexit. This small word, heavy with meaning and consequences, on everyone’s lips for the past two years, is about to become a very concrete reality for the millions of British people. At the time of writing, we are a month and a half away from the official date of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. Theresa May continues to attempt further negotiations towards a new agreement with Brussels, especially concerning provisions for the backstop. Her objective: to obtain concessions for an accord that can win a majority in the House of Commons. How this long and drawn out process will end is still un known, and there is very little time left. In addition to the political sphere, all of British so ciety is in a state of unease and uncertainty, some dreading a no deal Brexit while others actively call for one. According to experts, the consequences of this scenario will be felt immediately. About one third of food consumed in the United Kingdom is imported from the continent and reinstat ing a customs check at the British border will severely affect the supply chain. Several major supermarket and fastfood chains, including Sainsbury’s, Marks and Spencer and McDonald’s, have warned MPs against a risk of food shortages with a no deal exit. People are stockpiling in the event of such a catastrophic outcome.
In the meantime, the rest of the world watches closely, as the consequences of Brexit will cer tainly be felt in other countries, both directly and indirectly. For the French, it is with sadness that we prepare to sayau revoirto our neighbour, our forever rival and important ally.
