The Alexandrîa Ocasîo- Cortez phenomenon

She is very young, makes regular headlines in the American media, and manages her tweets to perfection. Unknown to the public a year ago, Democrat, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, found herself in the spotlight suddenly due to her un- expected victory in a state level primary election for the Democratic Party last June. To everyone’s surprise, the relative unknown beat Joe Crowley, Democratic stalwart of the 1th district in New York. A few months later, she was elected to the House of Representatives at the November midterms, becoming the youngest woman ever to serve in the United States Congress.

Since then, she has not stopped. She actively cam- paigns for free university admission, abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), and the establishment of a % tax on extreme wealth. The latter would allow for the funding of her ambitious environmental project, just presented to Congress, called the “Green New Deal”, which aims to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 23. AOC is also notable for her unu- sual background. Born of Puerto Rican parents, and server in a bar up to her election, she has become a symbol of diversity, and a major force in the trend towards the left in the Democratic Party. Her influence in the presidential election campaign for 2020 is crucial. With a dozen or so major candidates having declared they are running for the Democratic nomination, it is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who leads the debate: the environment and regulation of the financial system are already at the heart of the campaign.
