AUSTIN, 35, fitness trainer from Glasgow, Scotland, UK
Students wear uniforms in British schools. My school uniform was really ugly.
It was a dark green blazer with green trousers and a white shirt. I watched
a lot of American TV series when I was young and I thought Americans were
so lucky because they wore normal clothes to school.
CAROLE, 29, banker from New Orleans,
Louisiana, USA
My sister lives in London with her husband and
their two children. Their high school gives them
their textbooks, exercise books and even their
literature books! I buy these books for my children
here in the USA. It’s very expensive. Who gives
British schools the money to buy the books?
PHILIP, 38, graphic designer from Queenstown,
New Zealand
I lived in the UK for seven years and in France for fve
years. In England, my daughter went to school every day
from 9am to 3.30pm. It was great. In France, school started
at 8.30am and fnished at 5pm. She was exhausted. It was
just too long.

ANNIE, 49, teacher from Durban,
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
South Africa was colonised by the British, so we have
a lot of British customs. Children wear school uniforms
in South Africa. It’s a positive thing because there is no
difference between students who come from poor families
and students who come from richer families. It creates
team spirit!
MARC, 45, hypnotherapist from Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada
I have the impression that there are a lot of boarding schools in the UK
and that they are more formal than schools in Canada. Children wear
uniforms and belong to different extra-curricular clubs. Canada is very
different! There are no uniforms or after-school clubs here. It’s a pity.
WANDA, 32, nurse from Bury St Edmunds,
Suffolk, England, UK
During the frst three years of primary school,
children have free school lunches in the UK.
They are hot meals served in the school cafeteria.
I don’t think other countries do that. I think it’s
a good idea because children can’t concentrate
on their work if their tummies are empty.
