Indîa’s challenges
India is a vibrant country, brimming with cul-ture and colour, and bursting with atmosphere. It boasts breath-taking landscapes, that include deserts, mountains, highlands, tropical and temperate forests. But, according to a report by the Global Alliance on Health and Pollution, the country holds the unfortunate record for the highest number of pollution-related deaths in the world, ahead of China and Nigeria.
In this issue, you will discover an initiative launched to promote the work of ragpickers, and to raise awareness among residents about the collection of the plastic waste that is suffocating the country.
You will also read about the growing number of Indiansfleeing violence in their homeland and seeking refuge in the United States — a perilous and illegal journey with a more than uncertain outcome.
You will also discover the reasons why COVID19 is likely to have a lasting impact on the interna tional economy. The consequences of the virus can even be felt in the cultural world: many events have been cancelled or postponed. This is the case of the latest James Bond movie. It was initially scheduled for an April release but has been postponed to the end of the year as a result of low boxofce projections. This latest instalment of the 007 franchise has had many setbacks and the suspense is almost unbearable, but we will answer one key question in this issue: will Her Majesty's secret agent ever be a woman?
