Chicago, a magical city
Chicago easily lives up to its nickname. Lying on the banks of the immense Lake Michigan, with a 200 km riverflowing through it, and boasting impressive skyscrapers, the ‘Windy City’ reaches right up to the heavens with its own distinctive form of majesty. With its sublime views and valu able lessons in architecture, Chicago is discovered by mostly looking up, or rather up and down for example, at the vertigo inducing Willis Tower or on its glass framed skydeck for the truly adventur ous. Chicago witnessed the construction of the rst skyscraper ever, in 1885, and has continued its tradition of innovation and reinvention, inspiring architects such as Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright.
Despite being the third biggest city in the United States, Chicago has largely been ignored by tour ists, due in part to its reputation for violence resulting from the days of Al Capone and the bootleggers of the Prohibition era. However, for several years now the capital of the Midwest has enjoyed a new level of prestige, due at rst to the election of Barack Obama to the presidency in 2008. The Obamas’ adopted city now attracts more and more tourists (nearly 55 million in 2017!) thanks to its high quality cultural attractions, its numerous gourmet restaurants, and a very lively nightlife. It has after all, not only a strong tradition of Jazz and Blues but also the ability to attract the biggest names in contemporary music.
A veritable ethnic and cultural melting pot, includ ing dozens of districts with their own distinct identity, Chicago also offers a slice of the real America… to be enjoyed notably by the taste buds, especially by fans of ‘deepdish pizza’ and hot dogs.
