Description

Paying the price of education
A new television game show, called Paid Off, is proving very popular in the United States. The principle is a competition where students answer questions with the winner having their total student debt reimbursed. Michael Torpey, from the series Orange is the new black, is playing the part of the charismatic presenter in an attempt to encourage the reduction of student debt by drawing attention to the burden affecting 44 million Americans. During the democratic primaries two years ago, Bernie Sanders proposed making public university completely free and some politicians are now taking up this issue in the upcoming midterm elections.

As you can see, this edition ofVocablefeatures articles about American universities and their inequalities. The prestigious ‘Ivy League’ colleges are currently under scrutiny for their selection systems, with Harvard, in an odd twist, being criticised for its positive discrimination policy towards ethnic minorities as it may unfairly restrict the admission of Asian Americans. Has positive discrimination in American higher edu-cation become a negative for some? The debate continues...
