Standing out in an Audition:
Until you get to a certain level in your career, in most cases, it will be diFicult to obtain a job without going through the general audition process. This is actually one of the most important parts to any performer's career success. In this article, we will discuss several
techniques suggested by Helene that can help you stand out in an audition.
First, work on your improvisational skills, better known as "improve". In an audition, you will be reading the same scripts as many other people. Because of that, it is important for you to stand out! If you add a small, but humorous punch line, on top of an already humorous line; it will more than likely help you to be remembered for call backs or to even be booked for the part. Make sure that you keep your improve pieces short and that you stay on target with the scene. Don't add a humorous punch line to a dramatic piece or vice versa. Remember not to overdo it. I recommend one or two improve lines and/or "adlibs". If you add more than that, it may become distracting and work against you.
Second, consider taking some cold reading classes (acting with a script you've never read before). In most auditions, you will get the "sides" that you will be reading beforehand. There are also times when you may not. In addition, there may be times that you go into an audition, auditioning for one particular part but you will be unexpectedly asked to read another side for a diFerent character because you may have a certain "look" that the directors are searching for.
Third, you should have at least two monologues well memorized at all times for all auditions. Be sure to have at least one dramatic and one comedic. One of the most frequent sayings is that; "A good actor is always prepared". Preparation is important and monologues are very good to have. Even if you go months without ever being asked to perform; practice your monologue often so that you don't forget key lines and it continues to feel natural.
Fourth, work on your "inLections". InLections help add character to your script/sides. Anyone can read a script, but you want to stand out. So, stress those key words with a jump in anger, humor, etc, - to add character (depending on the scene). ook for and analyze those speciîc parts of the scene that you may be able to adjust (increase or decrease) the energy level. This will help draw the Casting Director in and will also allow you to stand out and be remembered.
Stated above, are several of the many things that you should use during an audition to stand out. Consider taking classes with a Casting Director or acting school like International Creative Artists owned byHelene Goldnadel. This will give you essential tools and provide you with the "ins" and "outs" so that you will know what to expect. Auditions can be a terrifying process, but remember that the more you do them, the more you'll learn, the better you'll become and the easier it will get.
