How to Use:

Apple MacBook

The Apple MacBooks provided by UW Housing are versatile machines that come equipped with a

variety of useful software. The MacBooks can run both Microsoft Windows XP and Mac OS X

depending on the user’s needs. Both operating systems have Microsoft Office installed, in addition

to web browsers, CD burning utilities and other useful software.

This guide will focus on the MacBook itself instead of covering specific software applications. For

information on Mac OS X, Microsoft Office or other software, see the list of Quick Tips on the

SYSTEMS

When you first turn on the computer, you will be given the choice to load either Windows XP or

Mac OS X. You can reach this screen any time by simply restarting the computer.

Alternatively, while in OS X you can log out to quickly access this screen. Click on the Apple in

the top left hand corner of the screen, then click “Log Out TLCUser.”

If you need to access files from both OS X and Windows XP, save them in the SHARED drive.

This will allow you to have full access to the files from either operating system.

INSERTING AND

EJECTING

DISCS

To mount a CD or DVD, simply insert it into the disc drive and it will be loaded automatically.

To eject a CD or DVD, press the

eject

key (above the

delete

key). Alternatively, both Windows

XP and Mac OS X provide methods for ejecting discs.

Windows XP

: Open My Computer, right-click on the disc drive and click Eject

Mac OS X

: On the desktop, right-click on the disc icon and click Eject

USING A

PROJECTOR

Using a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter, which can be checked out as part of the MacBook Accessory

Pack, the MacBook can be connected to a projector or external monitor. Attach the projector to

the adapter, then connect the adapter to the Mini-DVI port on the MacBook.

Ideally, the computer will recognize the projector and automatically display the image. If not, try

the following steps.

Windows XP

: Right-click on the desktop, select Graphics Options > Output To > Intel Dual

Display Clone, then check Notebook + Monitor.

Mac OS X

: Click on the Apple in the upper left corner of the screen, select System

Preferences, then choose Displays. Under the Arrangement tab, check Mirror Displays.

HOW TO FORCE

EJECT A DISC

If a disc is stuck inside the drive, first try the methods of ejecting described under Inserting and

Ejecting Discs

. If the disc still remains stuck, try the following steps.

•

In OS X, open Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in

the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.

•

Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may

take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes

out or the log-in screen has appeared.

HOW TO DEAL

WITH A FROZEN

COMPUTER

Mac OS X

: If a specific application is frozen, try to quit the application by pressing the Command

key and the Q key at the same time.

If this doesn’t work, try to force quit the application by clicking on the Apple in the top left corner,

selecting Force Quit, then choosing the application that is causing problems.

If this fails, restart the computer by pressing the Command key, Control key and Power button at

the same time.

If all of these steps fail, restart the computer by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.

Windows XP

: If a specific application is frozen and cannot be closed normally, press Control-

Alt-Delete, select the program and press End Now.

If this fails, try to restart the computer normally through the start menu. If this doesn’t work,

restart the computer by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.
