I COMPREHENSION
1
The main character is called Adam Kindred and he seems to be on the run .
He is wearing a long beard and no longer wearing a raincoat. He tried to change his appearance, especially the way he looked on a photo taken during a wedding.
His problems seems to have started that day and his photo has been posted everywhere in the city. We learn he has £18.78 in cash in his pockets.
2
The main character is walking in a big city, London, in Great Britain - l 29/30 : « emerging from the Underground station, … St Botoph’s Hospital »
(you may not know that St Botolph’s hospital is in London but the Underground station could give you a clue)
- numerous allusions to an urban environment :l 7 « the city », l 10 « the many cash machines he had passed », l 12 « a modern twenty-first city », l 47/48 « a cluster of glass and steel coumns that contained the scenic elevators serving the nine floors of St Botolph’s. »
From line 1 to line 28
3
Adam wants to become anonymous, unrecognizable, invisible .He doesn’t want people to notice him. He wants to integrate the missing people population which is increasing in Great Britain.
4
He changed his looks, so as not to match the photo of the wedding.
He doesn’t want to be spotted with the technological devices of our modern world, that’s why he doesn’t want to use cash machines and his credit card. He only relies on his cash.
L 7/8 « he was already a long way from the man pictured in that wedding photo…. nobody was going to connect this new version of Adam … with that one. »
L 10 « He had thought about using his card to extract more cash….But he had sensed instinctively that the only way to avoid detection …. was to take no advantage of the services t offered. »
5
a)
As it is described in the text, an « urban ghost » is a beggar, someone who sleeps rough, who is not integrated in our social society, someone who lives alone, isolated, someone who is part of the city but that no one considers as such.
b)
No he hasn’t yet but he is on his way to become one. . Yet he still has a purpose, some money (not much) , doesn’t look like a beggar but already has the typical bushy beard of one…
6
He seems to be quite confident that he will succeed in hiding from society. The only problem that seems to worry him is the small amount of money he has.
L 23 « This lost , vanished population of Great Britain had just gained a new member. »
L 26 « Adam thought it shoudn’t be too difficult to join their number as long as he didn’t make any foolish mistakes. »
L 27/28 » He tried not to think how he was going to survive when his money ran out tomorrow or the next day. »
From line 29 to the end
7
a)
The main character is going to St Botolph’s hospital, to encounter Dr Philip Wang.
b)
Adam seems to find the place soothing and impersonal. The place is an open space, very modern and cold. It is described as a place where no one can notice you , but for the cameras recording people.
Read the whole texte again.
8
Adam must have been a young successful businessman or some executive in a bank (i.e. The clothes he is wearing or usually wearing). He had a social life and obviously earned his life well enough. From what he says, he needs to turn his back on what urban life can offer and that he used to enjoy.
L 3 « not wearing his raincoat, nor carrying his briecase. He was wearing his tie… and he had his wallet… and mobile phone with him.
L 6 « he hoped the suit and the tie would counterbalance this ».
9
Those people are the cast out of our modern societies. Adam seems to feel estranged from his former life and comfortable with that of the « urban ghosts ». He wants to be part of their crowd. Their way of living is at that moment of his life a secure shelter.
