Landmark Academy, recognizing the unique giftedness of the

ACADEMICS
LandmarkAcademyiscommittedtoprovidinganexceptionaleducationforallofourstudents.Withour
customdesignedcurriculumandourfocusonindividuallearningstyles,wemakeitourtopprioritytoprovide
excellenceinthisarea.
Thefollowingareafewitemsyoushouldknowaboutouracademicfocus.
REPORTCARDSANDPROGRESSREPORTS
Reportcardsareissuedfourtimesperyear,attheendofeach10-weekgradingperiod.Aprogressreportwill
beissuedatthemid-termpointofeachquarter.Aphonecalloremailfromtheteacherisalsoanormal
meansofcommunicatingtoparentsaboutastudent’sprogress,ifthereisachangefromthenorm.
Wewillendeavortocommunicatefrequentlywithourparentsoneachstudent’sprogress.Ourstudent
agendabooksaredesignedtoletparentsknowwhattheirchildrenarelearningandtohelptheirchildren
prepareforupcomingtestsandprojects.Ourteacherswillalsocommunicateusinge-mailandtelephoneas
toprogressand/ordifficultiesastudentmaybehaving.
Parent/teacherconferencesareheldattheendofeachreportcardmarkingperiod.Allparents/guardianswill
bescheduledtoconferwithteachersduringthistime.Reportcardsforallcardmarkingswillbedistributed
duringconferencetimesonly.Pleaserefertotheschoolcalendarforconferencedatesandtimes.
Ourgoalistocontinuallykeepparentsinformedoftheirchild’sprogress.ThereshouldbeABSOLUTELYNO
REASONforaparenttobesurprisedabouttheirchild’sprogressinschool.Teachersshouldoccasionallycall
or e-mail parents to advise them of a student’s progress. Parents are also expectedtocontactthe
teacher/schooliftheyhaveanyquestionsorconcerns.
LandmarkAcademyusesthefollowinggradingsystem.

HOMEWORKPOLICY
Webelievethathomeworkhasapracticaluseinenhancingstudentlearning.However,wealsobelievethat
effectivelearningcanoccurwithaminimalamountofhomeworkbeingassigned,ifclassroominstructionis
well-plannedandwell-executed.
Thepurposesforhomeworkareasfollows:
1.Preparation–Thistypeofhomeworkisusedforobtainingbackgroundinformationandtoprepare
fortheintroductionofnewmaterial.
2.Practice–Thistypeofhomeworkisusedtoreinforceskillsandsubjectmatterintroducedinclass.
3.Extension–Thistypeofhomeworkisusedtomovestudentsbeyondtheclassroomcontent,
encouragingthecreativeandimaginativepursuitofknowledge.
Landmarkplacesapremiumontheimportanceoffamilyandlivingabalancedlife.Ourstudentsareengaged
in learning from 7:45 a.m. until 2:55 p.m., even longer when extra-curricular activities are considered.
Childrenneedrecreationtime,familytimeandtimetosimplyunwind.Webelievethathomeworkshouldnot
bepunitiveorexcessive.
Throughourexpertiseinlearningstylesandpersonalizedinstructionwebelievethatwecanensurethat
learningisoptimizedintheclassroomandthathomeworkwillbeusedwhenneeded.Pleasenote:students
whodonotuseclasstimewisely,mayberequiredtofinishclassworkathome.
ASSIGNMENTPOLICY
Topromoteacademicexcellence,itisexpectedthatallassignmentswillbeturnedinontime.Late
assignmentswillbeaccepteduponteacherdiscretion.Forassignmentinformation,pleasecheckyourchild's
dailyagendaandskywardaccount.

ACADEMICINTEGRITYPOLICY
ItisLandmarkAcademy’sintenttomaintainandencouragehighstandardsofpersonalconduct.These
standardsincludepersonalhonesty,disciplineandintegrity.Itisourbeliefthatallstudentsshouldcomplete
theirownwork.Itisrequiredthatanyschoolworkthatisturnedinforcreditisaresultofthestudent’sown
efforts.GenerallyACADEMICDISHONESTYoccursanytimeastudentturnsinworkthatisnottheirown.
Academicdishonestyisunacceptable.Itisalsounderstoodthatstudentspromotingacademicdishonestyby
supplying homework, papers, answers to test, to be copied or supplied, are also guilty of Academic
Dishonesty. Specifically, students should be aware of the following information regarding Academic
Dishonesty:
• Plagiarism–Bydefinition,thisisconsideredstealingorpassingoffofideasusingwordsofanotheras
one’sown.Studentsarenotpermittedtousethethoughts,expressionsorideasofanotherindividual
andclaimthemastheirownoriginalwork;insteadtheymustcreditthesourceoftheseexamplesin
theirfinishedproduct.

• Testing–Theresultofaquizortestshouldrepresentthestudents’ownwork.Thisworkshouldbe
performedduringthetestingperiodwithoutanyunauthorizedassistance.Specifically,thisprohibits
suchbehavioraslookingatanotherstudent’spaperorhavinginappropriatewrittenmaterialavailable
foruse.Conversationamongstudentsshouldneveroccurduringtestingperiod.
• Papers/Projects–Allpapersandprojectsareexpectedtobethatofthestudent’sownoriginal
thoughts,ideas,andlabor.Thus,Plagiarismortheunacceptableuseofpurchasedorborrowed
papersorprojectsisspecificallyprohibited.
• PrintandElectronicSources–Allinformationobtainedfromprintedresources,books,magazines,
etc.andanyinformationthatisavailablefromelectronicdatabasesareconsideredtheideasand
propertyofanother.Thus,thedirectcopyingorparaphrasingofthesesourceswithoutgivingcreditis
consideredplagiarismandaviolationoftheAcademicIntegrityPolicy.
ACADEMICHONORROLL
An academic honor roll has been established for the purpose of recognizing and promoting academic
achievement.Astudentmustobtaina“B”oraboveineachclasstobeonthehonorroll.Citizenshipwillalso
beanintegralpartofthehonorroll.Ifacitizenshipmarkdisplaysanytypeofneedforimprovementin
academicsorbehavior,thatstudentwillberemovedfromthehonorroll.
PROMOTION/RETENTION
AstudentatLandmarkAcademyispromotedtothenextgradeleveleachspringbasedprimarilyonajoint
decisionamongteachers,parents,andthebuildingadministrator,whenpossibleaconsensusisdesired.
Factorssuchasacademiclevelattained,academicprogress,maturitylevel,andageofthechildaretakeninto
accountwhenpromotiondecisionsaremade.However,thebuildingadministratorreservestherightto
retainastudentinthesamegradewhen,inhis/herjudgment,acombinationofthefactorslistedabove
stronglysuggestthatastudentneedstohaveanotheryearofgrowthinordertobesuccessfulatthe
nextgradelevel.Suchadecisionisnevermadefrivolously,andisprecededbynumerouscommunications
betweentheschoolandtheparentthroughouttheschoolyear.
SPECIALEDUCATION
AllspecialeducationstudentshaveanIndividualizedEducationalPlan(IEP)writtenforthemannually,and
theirclassesareprovidedintheleastrestrictiveenvironment.Specialeducationstudentsfollowthesame
schoolrules,regulations,andpoliciesasgeneraleducationstudentsunlessalteredbyanIndividual
EducationalPlanningCommittee(IEPC)decisionorthelocalpolicyisinconflictwithacounty,state,or
federalrule/policy.

TITLE1
LandmarkAcademyhasaschool-wideTitle1program.Thismeansthatanystudentwhodoesnotmeet
stateproficientandadvancedlevelsofstudentachievementcanreceiveservicesthroughTitle1funding
(FederalSupplementalProgram)thataredesignedtohelpchildrenreachhighacademicstandards.In
receivingfundsfromthisprogram,theschoolhasarequirementtoinformyou,asparentsofchildren
attendingaTitleIschool,ofinformationavailabletoyouregardingtheprofessionalqualificationsofyour
child’sclassroomteacher(s).Informationwillbeprovidedtoyouuponrequestasfollows:
• Whetheryourchild’steacherhasmetMichiganqualificationandlicensingcriteriaforthegradelevels
andsubjectareasinwhichtheteacherprovidesinstruction.
• Whetheryourchild’steacheristeachingunderemergencyorotherprovisionalstatusthroughwhich
Michiganqualificationorlicensingcriteriahavebeenwaived.
• Thebaccalaureatedegreemajorofyourchild’steacherandanyothergraduatecertificationordegree
heldbytheteacher,aswellasthefieldofdisciplineofthecertificationordegree.
• Whetheryourchildisprovidedservicesbyteacherassistantsand,ifso,theirqualifications.
Youmayalsorequestadditionalinformationonthelevelofachievementofyourchildineachofthe
Michigan’sassessments.MichiganusestheMichiganEducationalAssessmentProgramtodeterminelevels
ofachievement.
