How to Be a Smarter Consumer of
Detergents and Waxes
B L E N D C O
SYSTEMSBuckle Up here we GO!
Strap on your helmets and buckle your seatbelts. We
will touch on many facets of the chemicals
business. We are going to fly by many key areas
and I encourage you to see me afterwards for
clarification and further depth in any of these areas.
B L E N D C O
SYSTEMSSo you own a carwash…and you aren’t a chemist!
This overview is designed to answer many common detergent and wax questions in what we hope is
a fun, informative and engaging way!
Hopefully this will answer lots of questions that you have such as:
1) What are the key properties of a detergent?
2) Why does Blendco have a two part system?
3) How can I use these tools to make more money?
4) How can I be a smarter consumer of detergents and waxes?
5) What is my cost for each wash product and how does that compare vs. best in class and
average?
Here are some facts that may surprise you:
The “average” chemical guy is “average” at what he does
90% of washes have some significant area(s) for improvement
Supplier 1 may recommend quality X and supplier 2 may recommend 2X- so “recommended”
strength is meaningless
We have an opportunity for questions at the end but feel free to ask along the way too!

SYSTEMSIntroduction to Detergents
A few simple questions before we get into Molecules:
Why does someone wash their car?
Hopefully you all answered: to get it clean and to protect it
What cleans? What protects?
Hopefully most of you said: detergents clean and waxes protect
Friction and High Pressure help too- but you need detergents
Now someone tell me how you determine a good detergent or wax from a poor one?
Do you know what chemicals are in them? What quantities of each is necessary? Do you
understand how cleaning actually happens?
Most people cannot fully answer these so they do their best to figure it out:
Try some and watch it clean?
Try some and watch it not clean?...but you can never wash the same vehicle…so stay
tuned.
B L E N D C O
SYSTEMSGreat Service- what does that mean?
You need a company that can answer the following questions:
Is my tyre cleaner at the right strength?
Right Strength depends on YOU- but are you cheap, average or all about
quality?
What is the cost for my chosen quality choice?
Do they give you a report that shows that?
How does my cost and usage compare today vs. last year?
This should be detailed in a usage and cost chart
What about quality items such as color, fragrance and foam?
Do these get listed and considered?
How can I improve my operation with chemicals?
Can I use less?
Can I use something more environmentally friendly?
If someone else gives me a price- how do I compare?
Should I change my two step process- if so why?
We will answer these but some basics first…
B L E N D C O
SYSTEMSWhat roles does a detergent play?
1. Cleaning
2. Foam
3. Color
4. Lubricity
5. Wetting
6. Scent
When you buy a detergent, how do you compare all of these properties?
Most ways are qualitative- you can see them
This works for foam, color, lubricity, wetting and scent
Cleaning is more quantitative and tough to compare because you can
never wash the same vehicle twice
B L E N D C O
SYSTEMSHow do you compare detergents and
make a decision which is better?
1. Cost per gallon
2. Cost per car
3. Dilution ratios including the cost per gallon
4. Cost for strength
Cost per gallon is easiest but the most misleading
Cost per car is good but must have a quality component
Dilution ratios- important but viscosity makes this impossible- a thick
product with 80:1 tip will use far less than a thin product at same tip
Cost for strength- requires titration- but even this misses out on other
factors such as the scent, foaming, wetting and color.
B L E N D C O
SYSTEMSHow do you measure the strength?
A Titration Test is the best way to measure a detergent
strength in the field
Titration is a method to trace chemical concentration in an application
system
It is a technique by which we can determine the concentration of an
unknown sample using a standard concentration of a solution that
chemically reacts with the unknown. This standard solution is referred
to as the "titrant.” When the reaction is completed it is referred to as
the "end point.”
It is the only way to measure the actual, accurate ratio of a product at the
point of delivery
It may also be used to track down application problems in a system
It can also be used to establish stock solution ratios for alkaline and acid
detergents
