HSSA permanent management, staffing and association structure is as follows, enhanced through further

MIKE O'BRIEN 85% Shareholder & Principal Director
Mike qualified in the field of development and project management in 1976 in the UK, where he worked on
large multi-discipline development projects. This was followed by a number of years in a similar role in the

Middle East and Asia, prior to arriving in Africa in 1983. By 1991, Mike had become the major shareholder
King Shaka Interpretive Centre & Cultural Heritage Route, KwaDukuza, KZN

and CEO of a project management company with offices in the UK, Kenya, Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland,
Mauritius and South Africa, which was subsequently purchased in 1992 by a major South African company.
Mike then went on to form his own management consultancy firm in 1994, which, from 2000, joined up with
the international firm of Haley Sharpe Ltd, in order to specialise in tourism consulting services and the
conceptualisation and masterplanning of tourism-sector visitor and heritage attractions. Mike has been
specifically involved within the tourism development and strategic planning sector since 1987, throughout

Sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, working with multi-national agencies, governments and

the private sector. His work has covered tourism policy and spatial framework planning; hotel feasibility
studies; strategic planning; business planning; marketing strategies; identification and securing of project
funding; tourism project implementation; operational analyses; and market research analyses and projections.
Mike has been particularly involved within the tourism sector in South Africa since 1995 and is a member of
the South African Association of Tourism Professionals (SAATP), as well as having lectured a course at the
University of Durban-Westville to post-graduate students on the Principles of Management for Cultural and
Heritage Tourism as part of their Tourism Masters Degree.
