Al Gore’s Science Fiction
A Skeptic’s Guide to An Inconvenient Truth
By Mario Lewis, Jr.
ExecutiveSummary
AnInconvenient Truth(AIT),Vice PresidentAlGore’sbook on “The planetaryemergencyof global
warmingand whatcan be done about it,”purportstobe anon-partisan,non-ideologicalexposition
ofclimate science and moralcommon-sense.In reality,AITisacolorfullyillustrated lawyer’sbrief
for global warming alarmism and energyrationing. It is aj’accusehurled atfossil-energy-based
civilization, especiallythe USA, and above allthe Bush Administration and itsalliesin the U.S.oil
and auto industries.
Wedo notexpect lawyersto argue both for and against theirclients, nordo weexpectbalance from
partymen.However,althoughGoreremindsus(inthefilmversionof AIT)thathe“usedtobethe
next President of the United States,” and concludes thebook and film with acallfor “political
action,”he presentsAIT asthe workof along-timestudentofclimate science—andaproductof
meditation on “what matters.”He thus asksustoexpect more from him than the mere cleverness
thatcan swayjuries or winelections.
Thisreasonableexpectation isunmet.InAIT,the onlyfacts and studiesconsidered are those
convenient to Gore’s scare-them-green agenda. And in manyinstances, Goredistortstheevidence
hecites.
The presentpaper, arunningcommentaryon AIT, findsthat most of Gore’s claims regarding
climate science andclimate policyare eitherone sided, misleading, exaggerated, speculative,or
wrong.Anextensive summaryofAIT’sdistortionsisprovided in AppendixA.Belowis alist of 25
ofegregiousexamples.
One-sidedstatements
• AIT never acknowledges the indispensable role of fossil fuels in alleviatinghunger and poverty,
extendinghumanlife spans,anddemocratizingconsumergoods,literacy,leisure,andpersonal
mobility.
• Itnever acknowledgestheenvironmental,health,andeconomicbenefitsofclimaticwarmthand
theongoingrise in the air’s CO content.2
• It neglectsto mention that aggregate mortality and mortalityratesdue toextreme weather
eventsdeclineddramaticallyduringthe 20th century.
• It neglectsto mention the circumstancesthat make itreasonable ratherthan blameworthyfor
Americato be the biggest CO emitter:the world’slargest economy,abundant fossilenergy2
resources, marketsintegrated acrosscontinentaldistances, and the world’smost mobile
population.
• The bookimpugnsthe motivesof so-called globalwarmingskepticsbut neveracknowledgesthe
special-interest motivationsofthose whose research grants,direct mailincome,industrialpolicy
privileges,carbon tradingcommissions, regulatorypower,prosecutorialplunder,orpolitical
careersdepend on keepingthe public in astate of fearabout globalwarming.
1CEICongressionalBriefing Paper:AlGore’s Science Fiction• AITneveraddressestheobviouscriticismthatthe KyotoProtocolisalleconomicpainforno
environmentalgainandthatregulationsstringentenoughtomeasurablycooltheplanet would
be a“cure” worse than the alleged disease.
Misleadingstatements
• AIT impliesthat, throughout thepast 650,000years,changesin CO levelspreceded and largely2
caused changesin global temperature, whereasthe causalitymostly runsthe otherway: CO2
changesfollowed globaltemperature changesbyhundredsto thousandsof years.
• It ignoresthe societalfactorsthat typicallyoverwhelmclimatic factorsin determiningpeople’s
risk of damage ordeath from hurricanes, floods, drought, tornadoes, wildfires, anddisease.
• Iterroneouslyimpliesthat astudy, whichfoundthatnoneof 928science articles(actually
abstracts) denied a CO -global warminglink, showsthat Gore’sapocalyptic viewof global2
warmingisthe “consensus”viewamongscientists.
• It reportsthat 48NobelPrize-winningscientists accused Bushofdistorting science,without
mentioningthat the scientists acted as membersof a 527political group set up to promote the
KerryforPresident Campaign.
Exaggeratedstatements
• AIT hypesthe importance and exaggeratesthe certaintyof the alleged link between global
warmingand the frequency and severityoftropicalstorms.
• Itclaimspolarbears“havebeendrowninginsignificantnumbers,”basedonasinglereportthat
fourpolarbearsdrowned in one month of one year, following an abrupt storm.
• It portraysthe collapse in 2002of the Larson-Bice shelf—aformation the “size of Rhode
Island”—asharbingerof doom. Forperspective,the Larson-B was220th the size of Texasand
1/246th the size of the West Antarctic IceSheet (WAIS).
• AIT presents agraph suggestingthat China’s newfueleconomystandards are almost 30% more
stringent than the current U.S. standards. In fact, theChinese standards areonlyabout 5%
more stringent.
Speculativestatements
• AIT blamesglobal warmingforthe record-breaking37-inch downpourin Mumbai,India,in
July2005,even there hasbeen no trend inMumbairainfallforthe monthofJulyin 45 years.
• Itblames global warmingforrecentfloodsinChina’sSichuanandShandongprovinces,even
though moredamagingfloodsstruckthose areasin the 19th and early20thcenturies.
• It blames global warmingforthe disappearance of Lake Chad, adisastermore likely stemming
fromacombinationofnaturalregionalclimatevariabilityandsocietalfactorssuch as
population increase and overgrazing.
• AITwarnsthatadoublingofpre-industrialCO levelsto560ppmwillso acidifyseawaterthat all2
optimalareasforcoralreefconstructionwilldisappearby2050—implausiblebecausecoral
calcificationrateshaveincreasedasoceantemperaturesandCO levelshaverisen,andtoday’s2
mainreefbuildersevolvedandthrivedduringtheMesozoicPeriod,whenatmosphericCO levels2
hoveredabove1,000ppmfor150millionyearsandexceeded2,000ppmforseveralmillionyears.
• It warns of “significant and alarmingstructuralchanges”in the submarine base of the WAIS,
butdoesnottelluswhatthosechanges areorwhythey are “significantandalarming.”The
WAIShasbeen retreatingsince the earlyHolocene.Atthe rate of retreat observed in the 1990s,
theWAIS should disappear in about 7,000 years.
2 CEICongressionalBriefing Paper:AlGore’s Science Fiction• It warnsthat “moulins”—vertical watertunnelsformed from surface melt water—could cause
half the Greenland Ice Sheet to breakoff and “slide”intothe sea, even though the scientific
studyto which Gore alludesfound that moulinsincrease glacialflowbyonlyafewmetersa
year.
Wrongstatements
• AIT claims glaciologist Lonnie Thompson’s reconstruction of climatehistoryproves the
MedievalWarm Period was “tiny”compared to the warmingobservedin recentdecades. It
doesn’t.Fourof Thompson’ssixice coresindicatetheMedievalWarm Period was as warm as
orwarmerthan anyrecent decade.
• Itclaimsthe rate of globalwarmingisaccelerating, whenithasbeen remarkablyconstant for
thepast 30 years—roughly0.17°C/decade.
• It attributesEurope’skillerheat wave of 2003to globalwarming;it was actuallydue to an
atmosphericcirculation anomaly.
• Itclaimsthat 2004set an all-time record forthe numberoftornadoesin the UnitedStates.
Tornado frequencyhasnot increased;rather, the detection of smallertornadoeshasincreased.
If we considerthetornadoesthat havebeen detectableformanydecades(F-3orgreater),there
isactuallyadownward trend since 1950.
• It blames global warmingfora “massextinction crisis”that isnot, infact, occurring.
In lightofthese and otherdistortions,AIT is ill-suitedto serve as aguide to climate science and
climate policyforthe American people.
3CEICongressionalBriefing Paper:AlGore’s Science FictionIntroduction
More people willseethe movie, An Inconvenient Truth(AIT),than willreadthebook. However, thetwo
areso closeinverbal contentandvisualimagery that, ifyou’veseenthe movie, you’ve practicallyread
thebook, and viceversa.Becauseitis much easier toreference pagesin abookthan scenesfrom a movie,
theSkeptic’s Guide commentsonthebookversionof AIT.
To minimize redundancy, theSkeptic’s Guideskipsoverintroductorymaterialthat Vice President Gore
developsingreaterdetaillaterin AIT.In most cases, passagesfrom AIT are reproducedverbatim. In cases
wherepassages are summarized, this willbe clearfrom thecontext.
AITdoes nothave distinctchapters. Tohelpthe reader followthe sequence of topicsunderdiscussion,I
dividetheSkeptic’s Guide intoseveralsections. My commentary mostlyfollowsthe runningorderof
Gore’spresentation. However, tokeepeachsectionofthecommentaryfocusedonthe same orsimilar
topics,Ihave—in some instances—groupedtogether thematicallysimilarbutnon-consecutivepassages
from AIT.
Some readers may wonder whyI commenton almosteverysubstantivestatement Gore makesratherthan
justthekeypointsorthedozenor so mostegregiousdistortions.Why cover somanyseeminglyminor
details?
Two considerationsimpelled me totake a comprehensiveapproach. First, anythinglessthana point-by-
pointexaminationof AITistoo easytodismissascherrypicking.After all,anynon-technicaltreatment
ofcomplexscientific andeconomic issuesisboundto bedistortingtosomedegree.Confronted with alist
ofadozen errors,or even twodozen, criticscouldaccusemeof quibblingandplausiblyclaimthat Gore’s
mostimportantpoints(whicheverones Ididnot commenton) were correct.
Second, AIT makes apowerfulimpressiononaudienceschieflybythe sheer numberofassertionsit
makes andimagesitpresents. Atypicalaudience reactionistoconcludethatif evenhalf of what Gore
saysistrue, thentheplanetisinserioustrouble. So Idecidedtotake aleaf outof Gore’splaybook.By the
sheernumber of errors anddistortionsIhave uncovered,I hopetofostera healthyskepticism about
globalwarming alarmism andthe energy suppressionagendaitallegedlyjustifies.
