How to... Transfer Your Home Page to the Web

 Although a lot can be said for FREE web space, it's hard to have a professional looking web site when your home page has been created with an on−line editor. By using FTP you can upload multiple pages and images all at once; pages that have been designed by you with a much more professional look.

 This tutorial will show you how this is done using a popular shareware program _FTP. We will als ow you how to set up a basic CGI, where to put it, how to called WS o sh upload it, how to chmod it. This is assuming you are using Unix as a server or a flavor of Unix such as Solaris or Linux.  There are several places to get this program. You can get it from the author's website at http://www.csra.net/junodj/ or if you're more comfortable downloading from a popular shareware site, you can get it at Download.com . If for some reason you don't care for either of these options, you can always do a search for it someplace else. Just pick your favorite shareware site and do a search. It is a very popular program and can be used easily by folks new to FTP. It also has some very powerful functions that the advanced user can take advantage of. You will be able to manage your CGI's with this program as well. You will be able to upload them and chmod  them.

Getting Started

 We are going to assume that you're comfortable with HTML. If you need a program to write HTML for you...you can get a very easy to understand HTML editor from our site. OK, please open your FTP program. You will see...

 

1. This is showing you the main directories on your hard drive. The window above it shows you exactly what directory you are in. As you can see this says: C:\WINDOWS\WS_FTP32

2. This is where the directories that are available to you on your host provider will be located.

These are the files that are located in the directory shown on YOUR machine.

This will be the files that are available in a specific directory on your host.

Getting Connected

Pushing the "connect" button in the bottom left corner of the program will bring up another window on top of your FTP program. This is the window you will use for configuring your FTP, and supplying specific information to establish a connection between your hosts machine and yours.

 

1. This isn't really anything technical. It is just where you put a name to help you identify your FTP host from a drop down list. You may have several so it is best to choose a name that is unique and reminds you of which FTP host you will be connecting to.

2. The information typed in here will be the information the program uses to connect to your host. As you can see in this description it is

looking for ftp.wipd.com. It doesn't necessarily have to be in this format. It can be a series of numbers such as a DNS. Usually any account you will get with a service provider who will be storing your HTML, will give you the information to put in this box.

3. AUTOMATIC DETECT: This is the default value for this box. Leave it right there. I've NEVER had a problem with this or ever had to select a different detect method. This will work just fine.

4. USER ID: When you sign up for an account you will likely be asked for a USER ID. This ID will be a part of your URL, so choose wisely. As you can see here I've chosen "dogbyte" which not only my directory at WebIT, but also part of my URL

5. PASSWORD: You will be asked for a password when creating your account. This is what is placed in this box. When you save this configuration WS_FTP will automatically remember your password so you don't have to type it in to log onto your FTP site. HOWEVER, be forewarned. If you don't write this down someplace and something happens you need your password, you will not be able to get it from WS_FTP. Very important! WRITE IT DOWN!!

6. ACCOUNT: Just leave this box empty. You will not need to place any account information in this box.

7. REMOTE HOST: Although I have some info entered in here you do not need to place anything in this box either. (in most cases) If you were part of a company and everyone had their own directory on the server than you place your directory in here. That would man the program wold try and find the specified directory when you logged on.

8. LOCAL PC: Type in the directory that your files are kept for transfer to the web. When you click on the hosts name it will automatically load that directory into the client window so you don't have to search your hardrive every time you want to upload files.

9. AUTO SAVE CONFIG and SAVE PASSWORD: It is a GOOD idea to have these boxes checked so you do not have to re create your configuration every time you use WS_FTP. By checking these the program remember them for you

10. SAVE and NEW When you have created a new profile and wish to save it, push save and the program remembers it for you. When you want to create a NEW profile push new. All the boxes will go blank and you can start from scratch to create a new profile.

 This tutorial is based on " the least you need to know ". There is no sense in confusing you at this point with a bunch of techno−babble that won't mean diddly−squat to you. Once you have the information loaded into the software to enable it to connect to your FTP site, just simply push the OK button.

 After you push OK you will see a window that looks like this. On the left−hand side the top window is the directories on your hardrive. The window below it shows your files. The windows on the right side of the program are the directories (top window) and files (bottom window) on your servers hardrive.

 It is going to depend on your server what exactly is in the windows on the right. It may automatically load your main directory, and you may not have a choice. Here we do, but so as not to complicate matters we simply double−click on the main directory. It is the one that is highlighted.

FTP!

 When you are first setting up your directories on your virtual server, you of course won't have any directories or files. I wanted to present this to you in a way that wouldn't require me to back track so I believe this is the way to do it:

1. YOUR DIRECTORIES: You may wish to consider these as sub−directories under your main directory on the server. I usually just loosely classify these as directories as well. But just so you know, they are actually sub−directories. The buttons to the right of the window give you the options of changing directories, making directories, and removing directories. When you push one of these buttons a little window springs up and prompts you for what you want. It is easy to understand
