Nozzle painting tutorial for Painter 6
Open a new file at 600 X 400 at 72DPI (background color doesn’t matter).
In the
Tools
palette (
1
), choose the
Rectangular Selection
tool or you can press the ‘
R
’ key.
Make a selection using the top half of the canvas. I used the
RAYFlect 4 Seasons
plug-in to
create the sky (
2
). You can paint your own sky. For those who don’t have this plug-in, you can
use the
Airbrush
and the
Just Add Water
brush to create a very nice sky. To add clouds, use
the
Image Hose
and choose the
Cumulus Clouds
nozzle.
To create the distant mountains select the
Lasso
tool (top row, middle icon) in the
Tools
palette
(
1
) or press the ‘
L
’ key. Draw the shape of your mountains from one edge of the canvas to the
other, like this (
3
). Press the ‘
F
’ key to access the
Layer Adjuster
tool (Pointing Finger icon)
click inside the selection once. In the
Art Materials
palette (
4
) select a dark green as your
Primary Color
. In the
Tools
palette (
1
) select the
Paint Bucket
icon or press the ‘
K
’ key to
access the
Fill
tool. Click once to fill the layer.
In the
Objects
palette (
5
) click on the word
Layers
to open the
Layers
palette (
6
). Double click
the
Art Materials
palette (
8
) click on the word
Nozzles
to access the
Nozzles
palette (
9
). To
.
on
Layer 1
, or press the ‘
Enter
’ key, or click on the icon (circled in red) to access the sub-menu
(
6a
); select
Layer Attributes
and the
Layer Attributes
dialog box appears; enter
Mountains
for
the name and click
OK
(
7
).
Located on the Painter 6 CD is the Content folder, it is here that you will find all the new nozzles
not contained in the default nozzle library. If you have an extra 400Mb’s of hard disc space you
can live without, I suggest you copy these libraries, but, if you don’t, you can always load each
nozzle library as you need it.
In
make your palettes smaller you can drag each section to where you want it (nozzles from last to
2
nd
). You can also shorten the palette by clicking and dragging the bottom right corner of the
palette (
8
). This helps to make some extra room on your screen for the file you are working on
To load a nozzle library click on the
Nozzle Popup
window (
Sushi
) (
9
), choose
Load Library
from the menu (
12
). When the
Open
dialog box appears select
Trees.zip
(your library will look
different than mine because I am renamed the CD libraries). Press the
Open
button to load the
library (
13
). Select
Distant Forest3-0
as your nozzle.
In the
Brushes:
palette (
14
), select the
Image Hose
as your brush. You will notice the brush
variants have changed. Play around with the 20 new default variants and you will be pleasantly
surprised at the outcome. The
Image Hose
is now subject to the same size and angle controls
as any other brush. There is much more to discuss about the new methods of controlling this
brush, but that calls for a tutorial of it’s own. Choose
Linear-Angle/W
as your variant. If you want
a nozzle to behave just like it does in Painter 5/5.5 open both
Size
and
Angle
sections of the
Brush Controls
palette (
15
). Set the
Minimum Size
to
100%
,
Angle
to
0
and
Ang Rng
to
0
.
Paint in your layer until you have something that looks like this (

wo things probably happened when you began painting. First the image sprayed inside or was
ou
me
id you notice when you created your layer and turned on the
Layer Marquee
that it snuggled
e
T
it outside the layer? Painter 6 defaults with the
Layer Marquee
in the off position so there isn’t
the familiar black and yellow marquee to be seen. You can turn the
Layer Marquee
on by
accessing the menu (
6a
) in the
Layers
section of the
Objects
palette (
6
). Now you can see
where to paint. Try it again. Are you still painting outside the layer? No, because anywhere y
paint the layer adjusts to encompass the new image. The new layer system makes use of a
Preserve Transparency
check box to preserve the original layers integrity. In the
Objects
Palette layers section click on the
Preserve Transparency
check box and paint in the layer
again. It works the way you would expect it to. Painter has done away with the old cumberso
way of creating and working with transparent layers. No more forgetting the To Selection check
box, it’s gone. I like this method much better.
D
right up to the image? No more pressing the
Trim Button
to make the layer size smaller. Using
the
Layer Adjuster
you can click anywhere outside the selected layer and move the layer. But
can’t select any other layer except by using the list in the
Objects/Layers
palette (
6
). To be abl
to select each layer with the
Layer Adjuster
you must first click on the
Auto Select Layer
check
box in the
Controls:Adjuster
palette (
17
). In this mode you can no longer select a layer outside
the marquee area. This is a trade off we can all live with. One more item before we get back to
painting, you can no longer use the
Delete/Backspace
key to get rid of an unwanted layer. You
must use the
Delete
button in the
Objects
/
Layers
palette.
Press the ‘
Alt

you who haven’t created libraries should load the named nozzle instead.
Paint in a few lines of ground from edge to edge starting at the base of the mountains. Move the
Grain
slider up to
75%
and paint in a few more lines, then mover the slider up to
85%
and paint
some more. Do this until the last few lines are painted at
95%
. You should have something that
looks like this (
21
).
Save your painting after each new step. I occasionally save paintings under 2 or 3 different
names to use in the future for experimental purposes. This way I have plenty of pictures to test
lighting, layers, image floaters, composite methods and different nozzles without spending a lot of
time creating something from scratch.
