Introduction
HP, in conjunction with Microsoft and Siebel Systems, completed an outstanding Siebel 7.7
benchmark result in on a scalable infrastructure that includes an HP Integrity server running Microsoft
SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and HP ProLiant Blade application servers. Conducted as part of
the Siebel 7.7 Platform Sizing and Performance Program (PSPP), this benchmark, validated by Siebel
Systems, demonstrates that the scale-up capability of HP Integrity servers, in combination with the
scale-out power of HP ProLiant servers, easily meets the performance requirements of the most
demanding Siebel enterprise customers.
These results demonstrate excellent scalability from our previously announced results of 8,000 users
achieved using a 4-processor rx4640 Integrity server for the database server. These results
demonstrate the performance and cost advantage of HP Integrity servers over competitive
servers, which took twice as many processors to run the same Siebel 7.7 benchmark, and
demonstrated support for only 4,000 more users.
What makes it work
The performance results for Siebel 7.7 were achieved with an HP Integrity rx8620 database server
configured with 8 Intel® Itanium® 2 1.5 GHz processors. HP ProLiant BL20p G2 blade servers
configured with two Intel® Xeon® DP3.2 GHz processors and 8 GB of memory were used as
application servers to run complex business scenarios in the Siebel applications. These servers all ran
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, and were load balanced by Siebel Native Load
Balancing. This powerful combination demonstrates outstanding Siebel performance across multiple
servers without degradation. HP BladeSystem servers offer a flexible and scalable environment that
allows you to scale-out your application tier cost effectively as you adapt to changes in your business
climate.
HP platforms—the number one choice for Siebel customers
As a Global Strategic Partner of Siebel and the leader in Windows-based server sales overall, HP,
together with Microsoft, delivers a proven, scalable, and easily managed environment for the most
demanding Siebel customers.
About the Siebel 7.7 PSPP benchmark
The Siebel 7.7 PSPP benchmark provides performance and scalability characteristics of the Siebel 7.7
eBusiness Industry Application Suite. The test simulates real-world requirements of a large
organization consisting of 14,000 concurrent active users in a call center organization, including
sales and services representatives running Siebel Financial Service Call Center, a partner
management organization with customers (Web sales and Web services) running Siebel Partner
Relationship Management.
The Siebel Scripting Engine and Siebel Workflow were used to incorporate business process
management customizations. The application also simulated integration with Web systems using the
Siebel Enterprise Application Integration component and the Siebel HTTP Adaptor. In this case, an
eight hour business day included more than 2.2 million EAI transactions.
End users were simulated using Mercury LoadRunner version 7.8 SPI. The average think time
between operations was 13-23 seconds. The Siebel 7.7 Scripting Engine was invoked to assign
service requests and navigate the user to the appropriate views. Siebel Workflow Manager executed
workflow steps based on inserted service requests. The Siebel 7.7 EAI HTTP Adapter executed
requests between different Web infrastructures.

The HP difference
As the number one platform choice of Siebel customers, with over 2600 joint customers worldwide,
HP provides the foundation for building an Adaptive Enterprise in which business and IT are
synchronized to capitalize on change. With the HP Adaptive Enterprise strategy, customers can
tighten the link between IT and business objectives in measurable ways, allowing them to rapidly
respond to, and even anticipate, new market requirements and opportunities. By using both HP
Integrity servers and HP BladeSystem servers, this benchmark demonstrates how the flexibility and
interoperability of HP enterprise servers delivers an adaptive and flexible infrastructure to meet the
business and technical needs of a dynamic enterprise. As supported by this Siebel benchmark, the
HP Adaptive Enterprise offers the best way to meet today’s dynamic market pressures and to build a
more cost-effective, agile foundation for IT and business.
HP BladeSystem infrastructures
HP BladeSystem servers offer a highly flexible and scalable environment that lets enterprises embrace
change, while dramatically reducing total cost of ownership.
HP BladeSystem is the next evolution of industry-standard scale-out architectures and provides a cost-
effective way to build an infrastructure optimized for efficiency and change. The ProLiant server
family is the market leader in industry-standard servers. BladeSystem servers are extending that
leadership. BladeSystem servers are available in 2 and 4-processor configurations using both Intel
Xeon and AMD Opteron processors. ProLiant servers, including the ProLiant BL20p-G2 blade server
used in this benchmark, deliver outstanding price/performance, availability, ease of management,
and solutions integration.
HP Integrity servers
The HP Integrity server family, designed to meet the most demanding enterprise workloads, delivers
unprecedented performance, multi-OS flexibility, high availability, and unmatched investment
protection based on industry-standards for enabling business agility and better return on IT.
HP FIRST: HP, the leading platform choice for Siebel customers, is the
only vendor to complete a Siebel 7.7 benchmark in a scale-up, scale-out
architecture to meet the needs of the most demanding customers.
