COMPILATION OF CROSS-SECTIONS FOR SOME NEUTRON INDUCED THRESHOLD REACTIONS
by
H. USKIEN and A. PAULSEN
Central Bureau for Nuclear Measurements
GEEL - Belgium INTRODUCTION
In connection with their own measuring programme in the field of
neutron cross-sections for threshold reactions, two of my colleagues, Messrs.
H. Liskien and A. Paulsen, are reviewing the existing data for such reactions.
The authors, although aware of the great difficulties involved, are
trying in some cases to evaluate the necessity for a new normalization with
respect to more recent absolute values. They will be very grateful for any
remarks made on this and other points, especially by the original experimenters.
All data available at the date printed on the right-hanid upper corner
of each sheet are quoted, together with the estimated errors.
The Central Bureau for Nuclear Measurements intends to ensure the
publication of the cross-sections for other neutron-induced threshold reactions,
to periodically revise the already published data, and to make available from
time to time the results of such revisions.
The help of the experimenters which have made, or will make available
any unpublished data is gratefully acknowledged.
J. SPAEPEN Directions for the use of the cross-section diagrams
All results available for one threshold reaction have been printed on one sheet.
Different colours have been used for different series of measurements. This survey sheet
permits to get at a glance a general idea of the measurements which have been performed.
For detailed examination, the same curves have been reprinted in the same colours on
several additionnai sheets, taking care to avoid any interferences between curves, which
would make the individual results difficult to read.
Details and comments about measuring techniques and accuracies are given on
pages, opposite to the curves. All available information for one reaction is collected
with the general survey sheet. Parts of it are repeated on pages opposite to the
additionnai sheets, representing the corresponding curves.
Single measuring points which do not belong to a series of measurements are plotted
in the usual way with vertical and horizontal bars indicating the uncertainties of cross-section
value and neutron energy. If the neutron energy spread is not known, a horizontal broken
line is shown.
Series consisting of several measuring points not too far separated in neutron energy
are plotted without indication of the neutron energy spread. In these oases uncertainty
limits on the cross-section values are indicated by solid lines. The "probable" value is
supposed to lie within the hatched area.
All uncertainties shown are absolute errors, which means that all uncertainties are
included, not only errors directly involved in the experiment but alsos due to
normalization. In all cases the original cross-section values have been quoted. In some cases
there was no clear information about then uncertainties available. Then a ver
tical broken line is shown for single measuring points, while points belonging to the same
series of results have been connected by straight lines. JULY 1962
