Synthesis and characterisation of Li WO (x = 0.03 – 0.7), Li Nb W O (x = 0.1, 0.4; y = x 3 x y 1-y 3
0.00 – 0.4), Li Mo W O (x = 0.1, 0.4; y = 0.00 – 0.3), Na Mo W O (y = 0.00 – 0.25) x y 1-y 3 0.6 y 1-y 3
and Cs Nb W O (x =0.25, 0.3; y = 0.00 – 0.2) systems have been studied. Powder samples x y 1-y 3
were prepared by solid state method at 700°C for 7 days. Single crystals of Li WO (x = 0.1 – x 3
0.45) system were grown by chemical vapour transport method using HgCl transporting agent 2
in a temperature gradient T / T = 700°C / 800°C. The samples were characterized by using 1 2
X-ray powder diffraction (Guinier, Philips diffractometer and Stoe Stadi P diffractometer),
infrared investigation (KBr-method, Bruker IFS66) as well as by optical spectroscopy (Bruker
IFS88 with attached microscope A590 and Zeiss-Specord S10 spectrometer). Some samples
were also characterized by selected area electron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy
(SEM) in combination with microanalysis and by high resolution electron mi
(HREM).
From the powder samples of Li WO , single phase PTB (PTB = perovskite tungsten x 3 cubic
bronze) is observed for 0.3 ≤ x ≤ 0.5, PTB for x = 0.1, PTB and PTB mixed phase for tetr cubic tetr
0.1 < x < 0.3, PTB and PTB mixed phase for x = 0.03, 0.05. For x > 0.5 samples, Li WO tetr orth 2 4
and WO reactants appear along with PTB phase. Single crystals of Li WO show PTB 2 cubic x 3 cubic
for x = 0.45 and 0.4, mixed phase of PTB and PTB for x = 0.35, 0.3 and 0.25 and of cubic tetr
PTB and PTB for x = 0.1. The cubic lattice parameter of Li WO system tends to tetr orth x 3
increase with decreasing x into the two phase region due to a strain minimising interaction
between the tetragonal and cubic phases. The infrared absorption spectra also indicate the
phase coexistence in the same range. Single crystal optical properties on polished crystals of
the x = 0.45 sample show Drude free carrier type isotropic reflectivity with a minimum at
-1about 14800 cm . Crystals of x = 0.4 differ slightly indicating a superimposition of an
additional spectral contribution in the range of the minimum. This contribution is related to
the influence of the tetragonal phase due to submicroscopical exsolution phenomena. For x <
0.4 crystals, there are brighter lamellars separated by sharp interfaces due to the separation
into PTB and PTB The data imply that the properties in the tetragonal part of the crystals cub tetr.
are dominated by electron localisation effects whereas the cubic parts are dominated by the
free electron gas effect.
ABSTRACT ii
An interesting optical property is the gradual change in color of lithium tungsten bronzes,
Li WO at atmospheric condition. This effect is explained by the high mobility of Li, which is x 3
attracted by oxygen at the surface to form Li O, followed by a reaction with atmospheric H O 2 2
and CO to form Li(OH) and Li CO . Therefore, Li WO is transformed to WO as indicated 2 2 3 x 3 3
by the color change from blue or dark blue to greenish. The color change phenomena and all
the atmospheric effects are mostly reversible when the sample is heated in evacuated tubes
above 500°C.
The system Li Nb W O shows that in presence of even small contents of Nb (y = 0.04), 0.4 y 1-y 3
trace amount of LiNbWO type phase comes as impurity along with PTB phase. The 6 cubic
intensity of PTB phase reduces and the intensity of LiNbWO trirutile type phase increases cubic 6
with increasing Nb content. For x = y = 0.4 the structure shows mainly the LiNbWO 6
trirutile. The system Li Mo W O shows that Li W O type impure phase comes out along 0.4 y 1-y 3 2 2 7
with PTB phase in presence of small amount of Mo contents. For samples with y > 0.15, cubic
the PTB phase totally disappears and Li W O type phase is mainly identified. The cubic 2 2 7
variations in the X-ray pattern compared to the Li W O pure phase indicate the formation of 2 2 7
Li W Mo O of variable compositions. Li Nb W O and Li Mo W O systems show 2 2-x x 7 0.1 y 1-y 3 0.1 y 1-y 3
that with increasing Nb and Mo content, the Li content of the PTB phase decreases with
increasing y. In the system Na Mo W O significant amount of W can be substituted by 0.6 y 1-y 3
Mo in the PTB phase. cubic
For the hexagonal tungsten bronzes (HTB) Cs WO , it is observed that under the present x 3
preparation conditions a Nb/W substitution according to Cs Nb W O is only possible for x x y 1-y 3
= 0.25, 0.3 and y < 0.1. For sample with y ≥ 0.1, along with main HTB type bronze phase a
significant amount of oxidised HTB-II type phase is also observed. Similar results are
obtained in the system Rb Nb W O . x y 1-y 3

Li Nb W O (x = 0.1, 0.4; y = 0.00 – 0.4), Li Mo W O (x = 0.1, 0.4; y = 0.00 – 0.3), x y 1-y 3 x y 1-y 3
Na Mo W O (y = 0.00 – 0.25) und Cs Nb W O (x =0.25, 0.3; y = 0.00 – 0.2) 0.6 y 1-y 3 x y 1-y 3
durchgeführt. Polykristallines Material wurde durch Festkörperreaktionen bei 700°C
(Reaktionszeiten 7 Tage) erhalten.
Spektrometer) charakterisiert. Einige Proben wurden zudem durch elektronenmikroskopische
Verfahren (HRTEM, SEM, EDX-Analysen) analysiert.
Li WO and WO neben PTB beobachtet.
