Overview

Washoe County School District Interim Benchmark Assessments are part of a balanced
assessment program to inform instruction, encourage learning, and enhance student achievement.
Interim Benchmark content measures student achievement relative to district curriculum both
while and after learning is occurring and may be used to monitor progress and differentiate
instruction in Tier 1. Please note that with Interim Benchmark Assessments, mastery at the time
of assessment is not the expectation. It is important to remember that Interim Benchmark
Assessment data should never be viewed in a summative manner to evaluate past performance of
students or teachers.


Test Security

WCSD Interim Benchmark Assessments are semi-secure. This means that teachers have
continual, unrestricted access to them, but students do not. Teachers should review the booklets
to assist in implementing the instructional pacing outlined for a subject. Students should not be
given access to the books prior to scheduled testing, nor should any items on the tests be taught
to students prior to scheduled testing. However, after each test administration, it is
recommended that the completed tests be used openly with students, debriefing items and/or
passages as needed.

State standards provide clear targets, state accountability assessments show a summative evaluation of student achievement at a point in time, common Interim Benchmark Assessments measure student progress toward grade level standards at key points in the school year, and frequent continuous classroom assessment and feedback to students guide instruction and learning. All three assessment measures work together to provide a complete picture of student achievement and are sources for triangulation of data for Universal Screening. In addition to multiple choice items, the Interim Benchmark Assessments include Written/ Constructed Response items aligned to state standards.

Administration Guidelines Cooperate with school administration in communicating assessment purposes and schedules to students and parents. During the administration of Interim Benchmark Assessments, foster a positive academic atmosphere. Help students understand the importance and value of the tests for teachers, parents, and students. Follow WCSD procedures to score and record student responses using the Data Management System (DMS). Written (constructed) response scoring is based on the itemspecific rubrics, and points should not reflect assessment of writing skills. WCSD protocol located on the Benchmark Assessmentswebpage encourages collaborative scoring. For assistance in implementing the scoring protocol, please contact Abby Kirst at 3333768 or Laney Porter at 3333769. Selected response (multiple choice) items and the written (constructed) response for each part may be scanned at separate times; however, reporting will not be complete and accurate until both scores have been entered into the DMS. Dispose of test booklets at the end of each school year as determined by the site administrator. Use of assessments and data For assistance in using the data management system, accessing and interpreting Edusoft reports, effectively responding to data, or using Nettrekker within Edusoft, please contact the WCSD Edusoft Data Management Team [e-mail]. Results from Interim Benchmark Assessments are used to inform instruction, target refocused teaching and differentiate instruction to support the RTI model. PLCs provide a rich backdrop for analyzing data. After test administration, use the Interim Benchmark Assessment test books to review items along with student responses and item analyses generated by Edusoft. Increase the level of student involvement by using ICan Student Checklists available on theBenchmark Assessmentswebpage.The checklists provide descriptive feedback to students for selfassessment and goal setting. Use test data along with Classroom at a Glance worksheets for flexible groupings of students within or across gradelevel classroom to facilitate differentiated instruction. Guidelines Specific to ELA Qualitative Spelling Inventory (QSI)This instrument provides a partial picture of a student’s reading and spelling skills. Administered to all students at the beginning of each trimester, the data help teachers determine which students are performing significantly below grade level (candidates for the Informal Reading Inventory), or performing at or above grade level (candidates for the Benchmark Assessment). st nd Informal Reading Inventory (IRI)This instrument, administered to all 1gradeand 2 th students and 36grade students reading below grade level during each 12week period as determined by the teacher,provides data for determining the decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills of individual readers which can be used to monitor student growth and plan instruction. Interim Benchmark Assessment (BMA)This instrument, administered at the end of each 12 week period, provides data regarding individual student performance as well as class trends towards mastery of prioritized standards.
