Dedicated to Grandma Rev. Rosa Rice (RIP)
One day in 1985, I was driving with my Grandma Rev. Rosa Rice to the suburbs of Detroit Michigan. A plane was flying in view of the car. Grandma says, “see that plane, I want you to pray for every plane you see, because God will bless you to travel all over the world”. Exactly what Grandma told me happened and she lived to see me travel to many international destinations and informed me about many things that would happen on each trip. Thanks Grandma for all the wisdom and spiritual knowledge you gave me. This is the beginning of my travels with nothing but God’s favor.
First I would like to thank God for the opportunity to travel the world. Also, I want to thank Grandma – Rosa Rice for telling me I would travel the world (RIP), Grandma Mattie Johnson (RIP), Regina Mastin - Ricky & Phabien, Zella Johnson, Darren Lovelace - Jaquita & Berry, Cheryl Spencer, Myrix Ross, Cheryl Wrone, Zun Lee for all encouraging words and book editing information and friendship, Johnson Family, Lovelace Family, Margaret Riley & Sharon, Beannie Graham, Leon Luckett, Melvin Gupton, Aces’s Group, Dr. & Catherine Eagan & staff (for all travel opportunities), Stacia Little, Jackie Stewart, Ross Haynes, Okey Eleweke, Ron & Val D umas, Al Cook, Karen Hoskin, Catherine Fountain – Kim, Cleo, Keith & Kenneth, R.J & Deidra Rice - Crystal & Ralph, Lucille Manor & Family, Clinton McZorn, Robert Sims, Ed Morales, Bill Ryans, Helen Williams for all Sign Language opportunities & Suzette Saulier, Marvin Jones, Marcellus Ball, Beverly Worbeck, and Gail Shakoor, Veronica Blackman, Ed Spencer, Pastor Nuckles, Joe Peden, Karl White, and Pastor James Ta ylor.
Freeport Bahamas
My first international trip was to Freeport Bahamas in the 80’s. A college friend Velyn who lives in Freeport invited me to come down for vacation. I flew to Miami Florida and had a small plane for my connecting flight to the Bahamas. Freeport is a small island with an excellent beach called Xanadu. You can snorkel or lay on the beach and relax in the sun. Her father picked me up one night and drove me all over the island of Freeport. The fried conch fish is excellent and other seafood. I didn’t try the raw conch fish, although everyone says it was excellent. The weather was in the 80’s and they drive on the left-hand side.
My accommodations were at the Freeport Inn, which is a small 3-star hotel. The 5- star hotel is the Princess hotel. This hotel has a casino with excellent restaurants. There is a straw market for souvenirs within walking distance of this hotel. I enjoyed the Caribbean dance show with fire and dancing. The individuals I met were friendly with great pride of their island.
On the second night Velyn’s dad who owned a Burger King and Construction Company stopped by and picked me up at my hotel. Mr. Cooper took me to all the major hotels and restaurants of family members on the island. He would not let me pay for anything I purchased.
Los Angeles CA/San Diego CA/Sacramento/Oakland/San Francisco Shelly (RIP)
During the 80’s and living in the college dorm my dorm director Shelly and husband invited me to travel to California for two weeks. Shelly informed me all I needed was air fare and all accommodations would be provided.
Los Ang eles
We stayed in Los Angeles with Shelly’s best friend Nancy. We toured Universal Studios seeing all the movie sets and production areas. We also visited the Chinese Theater and Hollywood Walk of Fame in downtown Los Angeles.
San D iego
We scheduled a day trip to San Diego and visited the Zoo. It was amazing seeing all the animals and taking pictures. I would definitely recommend this trip.
Sacramento/Oak land
We drove from Los Angeles to Sacramento to visit Shelly’s aunt. The family was very nice and we stayed for one night. The next day after leaving Sacramento we drove to Oakland CA to visit another family member. Oakland was a small city and we only stayed for a few hours.
San Franc isco
After leaving Oakland California, Shelly drove us to San Francisco. The streets were very steep and you have to be a good driver. We also saw trolley trains downtown and many tourists. We had dinner at Fisherman’s Wharf. The fresh seafood was excellent. Downtown San Francisco has many restaurants and shops.
Hawaii – Maui, Lahaina & Honolulu
I was blessed with my first trip to Hawaii in the 80’s. This was an 8-hour flight from Los Angeles. I arrived in Honolulu and transferred to Maui in a small plane with about 10 passenger seats. Once I arrived in Maui I had to wait until the next plane came in to get my luggage. A car rental was included in this package. I picked up the car with a map and had no clue how to get to the Maui Lou Resort. The car agent gave me brief directions in the Maui airport. I departed the airport driving in the dark to find the resort. After driving for about 40 minutes I found a store to make sure I was going in the right direction. I was given specific directions and was not very far from the resort. I got in the car and it wouldn’t start. I called the car rental agency and they bought me a Nissan within an hour. This was a new car with a cassette player.
Upon arrival at the Maui Lou Resort I went to the reservations office to get my key. This was a very nice resort with a private pool/beach, golf course, and a very nice restaurant. My room was not very far from the beach, and I could leave the balcony door open and hear the sea waves. I had to be careful about leaving my window open due to lizards. Breakfast was included and the food was excellent with the fresh pineapples. One day I drove to Lahaina to shop and see the area. It’s about a 40-minute drive from Maui. The prices for shopping in Hawaii were not the best. I also toured a small museum in Lahaina. There are many 5 star hotels along the Lahaina Beach for about 3 miles. Once I arrived back in downtown Lahaina I saw a flyer for an ethnic drum dance class. This was on the way to Hanna. I was able to find the location and enjoyed the class. I toured the Pineapple plantation area. Before the end of my trip I went to Jerry’s Luau. I registered at the hotel and they provided transportation to pick me up. Once you arrive the women put a fresh flower lei around your neck. The presentation of the food was awesome. They pulled the pork meat out of the ground to serve before dinner. This meat is cooked with hot rocks and rapped in green leaves. It’s another island dish called poi that I didn’t like very much. The entertainment was great with the Hawaiian hula dancers. Jerry did several songs before they encouraged audience participation. I was selected with a few other guys to get on stage and dance with the hula dancers. We had the entire Hawaiian costumes. By me dancing through the years I was able to learn a few steps. Videos of the show was available to purchase with me dancing for about $30.00. Hawaii is a beautiful Island with a great sunset. There are beaches with black sand.
Rio De Janeiro Brazil
God has blessed me to visit Rio Brazil eight times. It’s an 8-hour flight to San Pa
