When we think of Saudi Arabia, we think of endless deserts with some oil wells here and there. But there is much more in this great Middle Eastern country to see, even outside of its cities. Let’s take a tour!
The Shape of Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is a large country in the Middle East. It takes up most of the Arabian Peninsula, the land between Africa and the main part of Asia. The country has a long coastline, but not many natural harbors. Saudi Arabia has over two million square kilometers, but less than one percent is suitable for growing crops or raising animals. There are big cities along western coast and around a few oases, but most of the country has very little population.
oasis
An oasis is an area in a desert where there is abundant water for some reason, enough for plants and even trees to grow. There may be a small lake under the trees, or the water source may bubble up from a lake or stream hidden well below the surface of the land.
Desert people make use of oases in their travels, arranging their routes so they can travel from oasis to oasis and renew their water supplies every couple of days. If there is enough water, a village or even a city may grow up around an oasis. The major cities of Saudi Arabia are mostly near large oases.
