W hat is the difference between an invertebrate creature and a vertebrate one? Read on and find out!

Crown-of-Thorns Starfish.

The spine is the difference

A ll the animals on Earth belong to one of two main groups: vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates have a backbone or spinal column, made up of vertebrae, bones that link together into a flexible tube to protect the nerves that carry messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body. Along with the spine, the ribs and the other bones form a vertebrate’s skeleton.

Skeleton of a Frog.

I nvertebrates don’t have such an internal system. Some invertebrates have almost no structure at all, and others basically wear their skeleton on the outside of their bodies.

Snail.

Reach behind yourself and touch the middle of your back. The bumps you feel under your skin are parts of the vertebrae that make up your spinal cord. So I guess you are a vertebrate, like a bird or a snake or a giraffe!
