Butterflies
Be
Gone!
Yoga Therapy for Fear and Anxiety
Loraine Rushton & Adele Vincent Illustrated by Andrew McIntosh
To all the children and parents with kids
--> suffering from anxiety, with the hope that
--> this book will make a difference.
To Zoe, Banjo, Arthur, Jasper & Sylvia.
About yoga therapy
Each page of this book has a yoga therapy movement incorporated into the story. The book can be
--> used in various ways—simply read it as a story book, use the yoga sequence at the end, read and do the poses as you go, or let the child decide which pages to read and which poses to do, even if
--> it’s completely random. Yoga with children is most successful if they’re interested and they get to
--> choose the poses once they’re familiar with them. Children can safely do any pose in any order—
--> they naturally limit uncomfortable moves.
Yoga therapy works by balancing the meridians, as in acupuncture. It was developed in Japan
--> based on the 5-element theory of traditional Chinese medicine, the Japanese healing art of
--> shiatsu, and traditional Indian hatha yoga.Yoga therapy is a highly targetted and effective therapy
--> for correcting disorders of the body and mind. In this book, the yoga specifically acts to inhibit
--> the freeze-fight-flight response—which is overactive in fear, anxiety and stress—and to restore
--> balance in the autonomic nervous system. Restoring balance between the sympathetic nervous
--> system (freeze/fight/flight) and the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) enables a
--> deep state of calmness and relaxation. Relaxation is difficult for children and adults with fear,
--> anxiety and stress, yet it is a vital for the body to be able to repair itself, for the mind to be calm
--> and still, and for good-quality sleep.
Meditation is an aspect of yoga that is equally important for overcoming fear, anxiety and stress.
--> The character in this book spontaneously achieves a deep state of meditation towards the end
--> of the book. Meditation for young children is most successful if it’s just a few minutes long, is
--> regularly incorporated into their day and captures their imagination. The last few pages of this
--> story is very effective as a bedtime routine to help your child relax and connect with their inner
--> calmness just before they sleep. Ask your child to lie down in bed, do some starfish breathing if
--> they like it, and in ‘eyes-closed pose’ (savasana), read the last part of the story substituting their
--> name into the text. When you get to ‘because...’, ask them to finish the sentence. The answer
--> might be surprising and might be different every day.
