To all those who have had to deal with
questions and pain that no child should
have to deal with—may you still find
unconditional love of self to not only
overcome and survive but to thrive.
Preface
I was born into a household with domestic violence, and as the youngest, I watched my siblings and my mother become different people from those I knew in my heart they were meant to be. This inspired me to seek help in college and find a way to help others overcome the shame that often becomes a core belief of abused children. This belief leads to destructive choices and sabotaging behavior.
I believe that if we can reach out early to children who are being abused, or have been abandoned by one or both of their parents (by death, incarceration, or any other unfortunate situation), then we as caretakers can prevent them from developing this core belief. We as a society are seeing the result of children and adults who are suffering from this fear that festers into anger and then becomes resentment; it can cause so much pain that some feel the need to inflict pain on others.
If we work together to help them understand that they are not to blame and should not feel ashamed, then we can change that core belief and their future becomes elevated. This has been my experience and has become my quest.
