Introduction prawling to the south east of the revered Harare…there is a ZimbabSwe’sbiggest village, that became a town, that became a city, place millions call home, Chitungwiza as in that olden track, “mushamukuru, wakaenda kupiko, Chitungwiza.” It is that became our own Soweto… Zimbabwe’s biggest suburb yet also Zimbabwe’s Hollywood. It has produced or groomed Zimbabwe’s creatives and creative industry, some say single handedly- from film, by the book, poets, musicians, entertainers, academia, media practitioners, sculptors and other visual arts etc… Forgive me for name dropping these: Alec “Baba wa Shero” Macheso, Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zhakaria, Leonard “Musorowenyoka” Dembo, Charles Mungoshi, Charles Charamba, Jesesi Mungoshi, Nicholas Mukomberanwa and his brothers, Marshal Munhuwumwe, Mechanic Manyeruke, “Mr Chitungwiza” himself John Chibadura, and the latest Zimdancehall sensations. Yet it’s a very difficult place to live in as it is one of the country’s poorest urban areas; it is hard to grow up in, hard to break out from, hard to love…and yet, we love it to bits. It is the hotspot of and one of the biggest shapers of post-independence Zimbabwe’s political dispensation, and when it explodes, only military tanks and security’s “high handed” responses have been able to cool it down. It sprawls from Manyame river banks in the north all the way to Dema rurals in the south, from Manyame banks in the east all the way and beyond Nyatsime river to the west, encompassing Seke, Zengeza, Natsime, St Mary’s and Manyame park township suburbs, thus it explodes with human habitation. In this anthology,Chitungwiza Mushamukuru: An Anthology from Zimbabwe’s Biggest Ghetto Town,we have work from 1 artist and 11 writers who have called this place home or wrote home about this place or created artworks that highlighted the culture, identity, lives,
