This Book Is Dedicated To

My Mother; She sang to me and read me poetry from the time I was a baby until I was old enough to read them myself. Some of her favorites are mine too. Thank you Momma.

My friend Andrea; She is one of the sweetest and wisest ladies I have ever met. (She says all my poems are good.) Thanks Beautiful.

My sister Jan; She had enough faith in me to help finance this book. Thank you Jan.

Deborah Harry; Her voice is so wonderful and has inspired me in more than just my poetry. She hasn’t given up on life and neither shall I. Rock on Debbie!

I would like to thank Piyush Khare for taking the photo for the cover.

My Humor
(Well, That’s what I call it)

Enlightened Child
The baby was a darling,
he had his father’s chin,
But he had his mother’s curiosity
and his own sweet glowing grin.

One night while teething,
(his whole hand was more than damp)
His eyes aglow with wonder,
he contemplated the antique lamp.

So smooth and round it felt,
as he sat there on the rug.
Despite frayed wires and hands all wet,
he reached and grabbed the plug.

Oh, he still gets into everything,
just as any scamp,
But, he must have learned a thing or two,
cause he still won’t touch a lamp.

1980

Cat And Mouse
Cute kitten, cuddly thing
Fluffy, furry soft as down
Pleasant purring song you sing
Except, of course, to the mouse you found

Poor small mouse with fur of gray
Kitten smiling at your frown
Scratching, squeaking little prey
So afraid of a kitten sound

The Hat
OK kids, now where’s it at?
Your dad can’t leave without his hat.
Look under the table and behind the chair.
Look close and see if it’s there.

Don’t stand and listen, it makes no sound.
No one leaves until it’s found.
Don’t look at me, look under the bed!
Never mind kids, it’s on my head.

Sine Signs
Going to bed too soon after supper nearly
always causes me bad dreams.
Nightmares are the result of an overstuffed
stomach, or so it seems.
I’ve dreamed of monsters, wild animals,
all kinds of evil men and ghosts,
And I’ve nearly always found the cause to be
stuffed peppers, meat loafs, or roasts.
Once I built a complete house in my sleep
after retiring too tired.
In one dream I was stuck with the ugly mother
of the horrible brat I’d sired.
But the weirdest and wildest dream I ever had
to wrap my mind in tangles,
I was attacked from three sides by hundreds of fierce,
bloodthirsty, man-eating right-triangles.
The first charged up and nipped at my toe,
death oozing from every line.
But I had the power to destroy the thing by computing
its tangent, cosine and sine.
My computer was instrumental in their
swift and sudden demise.
I computed and killed and computed again,
oblivious to the degree of their cries.
360 circles surrounded me, quadrant by
quadrant they fell.
The dream I dreamed was mathematical,
but the war I fought was hell.
Logarithms were rather frightening,
half angles left me cold.
Calculating angular velocity
was worse than I’d been told.
Ordinates and abscissas were easy, arcs
and radians combated with .
Then I suddenly began to worry when I
found that spheres and cubes could fly.
I awoke with two philosophical thoughts:
first, that I had done my best.
Second, I calculated that there were only thirteen
more hours till my next trig test.
Laying off spicy foods dispels nightmares
and bad dreams I find.
And laying off difficult subjects,
perhaps physics will ease my mind.

1983

Why A Fly?
When a fly, I chance to see,
I think of Blake and Emily.
I wonder what transpired and why,
To give such credence to a fly.
