Chapter One

“I 'll be fine, daddy. Don't wait up.”
I kissed my father on the cheek and winked at my mom as I walked out to meet my cousin, Shaniece. My father hated me going out, and I always had to ask my mom to make him happy, so he wouldn't give me a hard time. Him and my uncle were very protective of us.
She and I were going to the Penn Relays out in Philadelphia. Yeah, I was twenty-two, still going to that high school shit, but trust me, more than a track meet happens there. People from all over came there, and the parties were always lit. Shaniece's boyfriend Reggie, who we called Reg, and his friends were already there waiting for us. She and I were always the life of the party, and Reg wanted her around him at all times. See… my cousin, Shaniece, was drop dead gorgeous, and I could say that, without anyone thinking I want her because we're related. Our moms are sisters, which made us first cousins.
My cousin was light skinned with gray eyes, and I swear her body was better than Beyoncé’s. She stayed in the gym, but she wasn't one of those gym freaks that lifted so many weights that she looked more like a man than anything. She had long hair, due to her mom being white, and she had a huge dimple on the right side of her cheek. When we were young, I pushed her, and she hit the corner of the living room table. She had to go to the hospital to get stitches, and the doctor said that since the cut was deep, it would make it look like she had one. She was very humble, and a people person. The only thing was that she and I both were naive when it came to the streets.
We lived around the corner from the hood, or projects as they call them, but our parents never allowed us to go there. We were taken and picked up from school every day, and barely allowed to go out. We didn't mind as much, because both of us wanted to go to college. In order to do that, you had to focus. Fortunately for us, we both graduated top of our class, and were set to graduate with our Bachelors in Finance. That's another reason we were going. The guys wanted to celebrate that, too.
“Hey, baby,” Shaniece said, and stepped out the car. The guys were at some restaurant down on South Street when we got there. They had just finished eating, and had a take out box for both of us. The two of them tongued each other down like none of us were there.
“Mannnn, y'all get on my nerves with that shit,” Tommy said, and grabbed me by the waist from behind. The two of us used to date a few years ago, but he was young and cheated too much for me. Granted, I took him back a few times, and that must've made him believe I allowed it because he didn’t stop. The last time he got caught was enough for me.
Tommy was a pretty boy, and the girls flocked to him and the crew daily. They were the up and coming dope boys that had the money, cars, and everything else that came with doing those illegal things. He was light skinned with some freckles on his face. His body was to die for, and his sex game was great. Then again, he is the only one I'd ever been with. I don't know who taught him how to please a woman at his young age, but I appreciated her, because he could make my body do some crazy things.
“Tommy, why must you grab me like that every time you see me? What if another dude tried to kick it to me?”
“Go ahead with that shit, Promise. You know ain't nobody taking you from me.”
I laughed, because he always got in his feelings when I mentioned being with someone else. Little did he know, it would eventually happen.
“Man, cut that shit out. You know damn well Laurie is having your baby,” I said and tried to step away, but he caught me.
“That was supposed to be you carrying my kids,” he whispered in my ear. He let me go when Laurie came toward us.
“Look, Tommy… stop feeling on her and wishing you two were still together. She doesn't want your ass, and if you keep it up, I'm not going to want you, either.”
He pulled Laurie close and kissed her. I knew people probably thought she was throwing shade at me, but I was actually cool as hell with Laurie. I'm sure she had her insecurities about him, but she knew first hand that I didn't want him.
“I'm saying… why don't we have a threesome, and then I don't have to lust after her.”
“Do you want to smack him, or do you want me to do it?” I asked Laurie, but she ended up punching him in the stomach, and he leaned over laughing.
Tommy talked a lot of shit, but he loves the hell out of his girl. He always told me that I was the woman who made him a better man for her. The shit he did to me, he could never find himself doing to her. They always say when you break up with a man, whatever you taught him, he'll take in his new relationship, and that's the truth.
“Keep playing, and Laurie is going to kill your ass in your sleep,” Reg said with Shaniece standing in front of him.
I admired my cousins’ relationship. They've been together for two years, and to our knowledge, he's never cheated on her. If he had, he must be good at hiding it, because no woman had ever approached her on any bullshit. That nigga worshipped the ground she walked on, and anyone that knew him, knew that, too. His mom absolutely loved Shaniece. She couldn't wait for her to get pregnant, and for her son to marry her.

“Come on, Promise. Reggie is going to have a fit if I'm late,” Shaniece whined as she waited for me to get ready for the club. I was usually the one that had to wait for her.
“Okay, I'm coming.”
I grabbed my purse and phone, and we both left. We pulled up at some club called The Roxxy on Delaware Ave. When we looked, the line was wrapped around the damn corner. That shit didn't make any damn sense. She parked, and the two of us stepped out, making sure the other looked perfect. She wore a strapless coral dress that stopped above her knees. Reg said it was his favorite color on her, so she had to make sure she wore it. She had some nude Jimmy Choo’s on with her hair hanging down her back. I wore a black short romper with some silver strap up Givenchy shoes. I didn’t have the kind of money my cousin had but Reg always laced my cousin with whatever she wanted, and she didn't have a problem sharing the wealth.
I had a job, but she wanted me to save my money to get a house. I still lived at home and was going to start working and pay my student loans off so that when I did have my own place, that would be the last thing on my mind. Tommy used to give me money, and I still had that, too. He may have been a no good nigga to me, but he always kept the cash rolling when we were together, and my mama didn't raise no fool.
The hate from the women radiated off them as the bouncer took one look at us, and removed the rope. It was nothing new to us for women to behave that way. We knew how pretty we were, but the crazy part is that we are cool as fuck. Most people thought when you're pretty, you must be stuck up, but not us.  Reg had one of his boys come get us, and bring us to VIP. I told you that he wanted no one around his woman.&#
