Description

The Adventures of Dewey, the Alien is the first tale in a trilogy by Marshall Lefferts.Professor Nate Johnston is a Human entomologist, conducting research in the Amazon Rainforest. There, he unexpectedly meets an Extraterrestrial explorer (who will eventually come to be named "Dewey" by his new Human friend). At first, they are most apprehensive of each other and it almost proves fatal for Professor Johnston. But after some very tense moments, they become enchanted with each other and decide to go on a little adventure, galivanting about the Milky Way in Dewey's spaceship...only to get into more trouble than they ever bargained for. Their time together is short, but their unique, intergalactic friendship is sealed forever by the experiences they share, and in a cliff-hanger ending it is obvious that more interaction between Humans and Aliens is on the horizon. This first book from the creative, witty mind of Lefferts will draw readers of all ages into an unfolding saga of unpredictable and exhilarating moments. It features characters and creatures that delight the senses and bring a fresh approach to the often redundant way we think of what extraterrestrial encounters might be like. There is terror, adventure, happiness, fulfilment, sadness, tragedy and an abundance of sheer fun all synchronously bundled into this first book, which builds the foundation and excitement for its two forthcoming sequels.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Our universe is a big place. Statistically, it’s foolish to assume that there’s no life beyond Earth. But assuming there is life out there, is any of it highly intelligent? Intelligent enough to conquer the daunting challenges of traveling through deep space? Such a task requires technologies and phenomena we can only theorize and place into fictional scenarios at the present; and according to the current laws of physics, such travel may be impossible altogether within any reasonable timeframe, such as a human being’s lifespan.
To date, no concrete evidence has been presented that is compelling enough to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that Earth has been visited by extraterrestrials. There are numerous records of mysterious occurrences, convincing testimonies, blurry video clips, and tangible artifacts (some of them thousands of years old) that suggest it could be true, but irrefutable proof of any "First Contact" has yet to surface. Despite that, I am convinced that aliens have been to Earth.
Years ago, a personal experience led me to realize that we are most certainly not alone, and that aliens not only exist, but have been visiting Earth. No, I have never met an alien face-to-face, but while flying in a small, private plane, I did see something that I believe was of alien origin. The thing I saw was no recognizable aircraft, and it defied the laws of physics that our present technology must adhere to. Simply put, there is nothing from Earth like what I experienced. That exhilarating encounter has remained with me ever since, and has played a significant role in my developing and writing this story. This story is, of course, fictional, but my imagination was spurred to new levels at that moment, and these following chapters of fantasy are all connected back to how I felt that day and the reality of what I saw… and, perhaps, also by the fact that I have always loved science fiction, especially that which includes aliens.
Science often needs to explain and micro-analyze everything it theorizes, limiting itself to known parameters within its field of vision. Science fiction , however, allows us to move beyond those boundaries… beyond what we can actually see in the furthest points of the Universe, or in the minute world of quantum physics from our own corner of space. But, beyond that, who’s to say what is or isn’t possible? There’s still plenty of the unknown out there to be exploited by active imaginations. It is in this spirit of imagination without boundaries that I present you this story, the tale of Dewey the Alien. This is the first in a series of unfolding adventures that I hope you will enjoy reading as much as I have enjoyed writing them.
It’s fun to imagine what’s out there, isn’t it?

FOREWORD
In a distant galaxy, there is a binary star system where there orbits a planet with lavender-colored oceans and a bright purple atmosphere. Like Earth, it is endowed with life-sustaining elements (although the elements are quite different from those on Earth), and it orbits in its system’s "Goldilocks zone," exactly the right distance from its twin stars to be at the proper temperature for liquid water to exist and therefore, the proper temperature for supporting life.
The Purple Planet is home to many living things, and at the top of the evolutionary chain is a sentient, highly-intelligent species that has endured in its current form for many millions of years. These Aliens originated as squid-like, aquatic creatures, evolving mostly in the planet’s oceans. To escape growing numbers of ravenous sea predators, they eventually crawled onto dry land and adapted to living outside of their former liquid environment, utilizing the elements of their new, dry world to build vast cities and develop incredible technologies.
Within several thousand years of leaving the oceans, the Aliens developed the means to travel into space, where they discovered and achieved amazing things. At first, they explored every corner of their own solar system and then their home galaxy; but within a few million years they were venturing deeper and deeper into the Universe, exploring countless other galaxies and solar systems far beyond their own.
The Aliens found millions of living planets, containing countless species to study and ogle at. But all life they discovered was classified somewhere between primordial and primitive. None proved intelligent enough to communicate or interact with. The Aliens began to wonder if they would ever find another species whose intellect and understanding of the Cosmos could rival their own.
Then, about seventy million years ago, they discovered a solar system near the edge of a mid-sized spiral galaxy, and in it a water-covered blue planet containing abundant life. There was no sentient life there yet, but of all the inhabited worlds they had come across, this one proved to be the most intriguing. It had the most diverse variety of species they had ever encountered on any single planet, including their own. Studying the Blue Planet became a top priority. They began visiting regularly, monitoring its ecological and evolutionary developments with great interest.
Through thousands of generations, Alien scientists kept a keen eye on the Blue Planet and its occupants. They observed with great sadness as a massive asteroid strike decimated most of the planet’s life-forms, including a promising reptilian species that had begun making stone tools, and then watched with fascination as life rebounded and thrived again. They witnessed small mammals evolve into primates, and eventually into hominids, then into several species of Humans that began to use fire and, in time, build structured societies. The species of Human that won out and colonized nearly all their world began calling the Blue Planet Earth, which the Aliens found amusing. When the Humans started to show promise of becoming advanced enough to communicate with, the Aliens considered contacting them.
But as the Humans’ societies developed, they became too diverse and unpredictable. Many of them were quite peaceful, but equally as many were cruel and violent towards each other. It was decided by the Alien Council that exposing themselves to the Humans was too risky and might compromise the balance of their cultures. The Aliens had no interest in changing or trying to police the path of Human cultural progress, whether they agreed with it or not. Instead, the Aliens decided to continue studying Earth, but to remain unseen by the Humans.
At least, that was the plan.
For a great while after that decision was made, the Humans remained the most fascinating thing in the Universe to the Aliens. That was, until an expedition to Earth’s solar system discovered something buried on the lifeless fourth planet the Humans called Mars: an ancient, massive structure of unknown origin. So astonishing was this discovery that it brought a whole new perspective to the Aliens’ place in the Universe. Soon afterwards, the Aliens found a second structure, identical to the one on Mars only this one was on Earth itself, hidden in one of the planet’s deepest oceans. How they could have missed these gargantuan objects over thousands of missions to Earth was most puzzling, and the origin and purpose of them was a complete mystery. With these new developments, it became more important than ever to continue sending exploratory missions to the Milky Way in general, and Earth in particular.

T HE U NITED S TATES OF A MERICA P LANET E ARTH
It was 8 am in a suburban neighborhood of Raleigh, North Carolina. The sun’s warmth was just beginning to disperse the mist that bathed a small, public park’s grassy field, where a Human mother sat on a bench, sipping her nutmeg-laced Vente cappuccino. As the espresso kicked in, she smiled as she watched her two young children play in the dew-covered grass with the family’s new puppy, a chocolate lab of two months.
The children laughed and giggled uncontrollably as they rolled around in the damp grass, taking turns letting the puppy ju
