Extrait

Few men have led a life like that of Les Nichols. In Confessions of a Name Dropper , Nichols provides an insider s account on some of the most significant men and moments of American history.
A graduate of Dartmouth College, Nichols served our nation at its greatest time of need, first as a Platoon Leader in the 2nd Armored Division and later as a Tank Company Commander with the 3rd Armored Division under the command of General George Patton. Highlights of his World War II experiences include capturing German Field Marshal Wilheim List and liberating 6000 Prisoners of War at Memmigen Prison Camp in Southern Bavaria. The Bronze Star, the French Croix and campaign ribbons for the Battle of the Bulge are just a few of the honors bestowed upon this veteran whose professional career was as distinguished as his military career.
Nichols gained notoriety as the author of Impact , the official battle story of Patton s spearhead Armored Division. Other works include You are the West Point Story , prepared for the U.S. Military Academy; How To Tell It , a media guide for New York area colleges and universities; and Terrify and Destroy , an account of the 10th Armored Tiger Division. His knowledge of military history helped establish Les Nichols as a leading consultant and adviser on a variety of projects. He has served as a Technical Adviser for Warner Brothers Studios as well as Broadway s war play, Fragile Fox .
Les Nichols went on to launch his own public relations firm, which held accounts with organizations such as the Kentucky Heart Association, Arthritis Foundation, the American Red Cross, The Kentucky Hotel-Motel Association, and the Louisville Motel Hotel Association. He also worked with a score of celebrities like Roy Rogers, Bobby Riggs, and Jackie Robinson just to name a few.
Through Confessions , Nichols shares the lasting impressions of the people and places which have so richly penetrated his life experiences.

Confessions of a Name Dropper
by Lester M. Nichols
A decade ago, I began writing Confessions of a Name Dropper but because of my heavy work schedule, only five chapters had been completed. After retiring in 1993, I began work on the book again. I had a call from Byron Crawford, columnist for the Courier-Journal who asked to do an interview for his column. I found him to be a very pleasant and interesting person.
His column was about some of the stories in Confessions . He asked how far I had progressed on the book, and I replied, There is a great deal more to do. Byron quietly lectured me. Why don t you prioritize and complete the book? His gentle lecture spurred me to make the book as project number one. Needless to say, I am so glad to have received this encouragement.
The major thrust of Confessions was to share a large number of exclusive stories about 50 national and international celebrities in entertainment, military, political, sports and business giants. All accounts are humorous. Some are brief, others are lengthy. I felt that it would be fun to share these exclusive accounts with the readers.
I was reluctant to include chapters on growing up in Colorado and the first two decades of my life but the publisher convinced me that in doing so, it would help to explain my careers in five different professional areas.
My military career was the beginning of many different careers that included besides the military: fund-raising, sports, promotion, media relations, business, education, political and entertainment that proved most interesting and rewarding and permitted me to become involved with so many successful and prominent people in all of the above career areas. I do hope readers will enjoy these humorous anecdotes about very serious personalities.
The First Decade
Growing up in the mountains of Colorado, I can distinctly remember things that happened in my life. Yet, today, sometimes I start to do something and forget what it was I wanted to do!
Some of the earliest memories were going on hiking trips with my father and two brothers. My father began as a mining engineer (and later switched over to civil engineering) and was a very studious man. He was also a naturalist and on our hiking trips, he would describe in detail, all the flowers, shrubs, trees and bushes. At night he would tell us all about the stars and planets as we lay on our backs on a mountain top, looking up to the heavens at night. He would cut branches from birch trees and made whistles that really worked. Once, we went on a mountain hike and were walking after dark when suddenly, he told us to stop in our tracks. Don t move a foot, he commanded. We put down our bed rolls and went to sleep right away because we ached all over from climbing. The next morning our father shook us awake and said, I thought something was wrong. What appeared just several yards away was a steep precipice which could easily have claimed our lives if it were not for his perception of danger.
I can further remember walking home from our one room schoolhouse in the afternoon. As I neared the ranch, I could smell sour dough bread that my mother baked behind the fireplace. To this day, I never smelled anything so great as her bread. She would cover the warm bread with peanut butter that even now I relish.
When I was very young, my father put me on a horse (no saddle). He whacked the animal on the butt and we would go trotting down the mountain trail. I m not at all
