When I was 13, my sister Mandy told me that I was too young to go to the concert with Adam and the Ants. I was devastated. We stopped doing things together. She went on and did teenage girl things, while I resented her being older and able to do things I couldn’t yet do.

I grew up in a rural area, and I was extremely frustrated by it. I felt trapped, and I had to rely on my parents to take me places. I didn’t have any friends in the village, and I hated it.

I had asthma as a child, and the odd allergy. Mike was similar, though less noticeably. We had no medical complaints as kids, but the one big one for Mike was a meningitis scare when he was around ten.

Mike had a lifelong phobia of needles, until November 2010, when he got ill. He had a high temperature and a rash for about four days, along with flu symptoms, and he made a slow recovery. But six months later, he began to feel like his hands were getting weaker.

I helped bring Mike’s coffin into a packed crematorium to the rapping strains of Chief Rocka by Lords of the Underground. I had to say goodbye to my brother in front of hundreds of people, but I was too numb to feel anything.
