I’d like to dedicate this book to the memory of two very special men in my life: my father, Elder Frank Tillman, Sr. and my grandfather, Pastor Oscar Timothy (O.T.) Tillman. Though my father left this world and my life when I was only ten years of age, I learned from him the shadows of what a man looks like at home, the world and in the church. And to my grandfather, O.T. "Dad" Tillman, whose uncompromising ministry and devotion to the Lord has taught me how to stand and after I’ve done all I can, to stand. He also taught me that there is no retirement in doing the work of the Lord. He both pastored and preached the Word of God until the Lord called him home at 104 years. When asked how long he would preach, his response was only led by his character when he said, "The Lord said,
‘ Occupy till I come…’"
The gloves are off;
No one is watching.
Darkness attempts to fill the void(s) in your life,
But light patiently awaits its turn to shine.
I see a shadow;
Who are you?... really?

Come with me. Let’s turn the pages of life together.
Let’s boldly go where no one has gone before.
Dare to discover yourself and who you really are.
Dare to discover… Man-Power!
PREFACE
When Christopher Columbus discovered America, he did it by daring to cross the uncharted waters of the Atlantic and convinced other men of renown to sail along with him on a journey of unforeseen riches and new life. Today, I plan to take a trip along the sea of life and hope that you will go along with me as we tap into the uncharted territories of your soul / mind; we’re going to boldly go where you have not gone nor have you allowed others to go before… We’re going to discover the real you! We’re going to unveil man’s purpose and, hopefully, your own! We’re going to reveal man and the true power that lies within.
It is observed that, "in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed… Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are the lion or the gazelle. When the sun comes up, you’d better be running."
Are you ready? Let’s go!

Man (man) n. (pl. men) 1. a human being, distinguished from other animals by superior mental development, power of articulate speech, and upright posture… 9. one of the set of small objects moved on a board in playing games such as chess and checkers.

CHAPTER 1
WHO ARE YOU… REALLY?
" And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."Genesis 2: 7 (KJV).

How do you define man? What makes you a man? Are you really a man? If you cannot define what a man is, then how do you know whether you are looking at one or not?
It’s been said that, if you’re going to start a fight, you might as well just come out swingin’,…so get ready… because here it comes!
Let’s cut to the chase…a man is not defined by what he looks like! That defines one’s masculinity or their gender, but that does not define a man. You might look like a man, have hair on your face (and other extremities), sound like Barry White, have the height and shape of "Shaq" O’Neal, and even move like silk in motion, but that does not determine that you are a man! A man is not determined by his age; you can be 50 years old and still be just a "grown up boy"! You are not deemed a man simply by demanding that you be treated like a man because you say that, "I’m a man!"; by who’s standard have you drawn that conclusion? You’re actually looking for respect, but respect is not a right; it’s a privilege. It’s not a guarantee; it has to be earned.
A man is not determined by the size of his genitalia or by the number of women he can make holler his name at night; nor is manhood recognized by the number of babies that he can produce. Dogs can howl, grunt, have sex with multiple female dogs of different breeds, and produce puppies and still we don’t classify them as men; we just call them what they are…"dogs"! Maybe that’s why we’ve begun to classify one another as "Dawg(s)", but that’s another issue.
Regrettably, we have allowed society, Hollywood, the mass media, and the people out in the streets to define for us what we "think" a true man is. Well, I’m here to serve notice that unlike the movies, a true man is not determined by the number of successful fist fights he has started and/or has survived, nor is he determined to be a man by an unwavering macho, gangster image who refers to women as "female dogs" (you know what I mean) and beats up on them (those who do this I have deemed as less than a man, but there’s still help for you too). On the other hand, a man is also not to be classified by others as a "wimp", "wus", or "worm" either. You may not have the looks or the will to face an oversized bully or the courage to ask an attractive girl out on a date, but that still doesn’t define you as less than a man! To our dismay, we have allowed ourselves to have been shaped and sculpted by anger (extreme displeasure), tragedy, and weariness. As a result, life situations have mastered us rather than us mastering life situations. We have become slaves to our emotions rather than making a declaration of freedom and fighting to be in control of what is within us… our destiny.
My friend, you have to "know" who you are or others will "define" who you are for you! So… how and/or what can we do to stop the madness and regain control of ourselves?
Well, let’s first recognize that manhood (like success) is a "journey" not a "destination"! The journey begins with a single step, and then another, and then another. Before long, you will be on your way. Before long, you will transform from an infant, to a child; from a child to an adolescent; from an adolescent to a pre-adult; and from a pre-adult to a man. But it all really starts with a step out of who you "think" you are (that’s an opinion) into "who you were intended to be" (that’s purpose). When your purpose is not known, you will inevitably abuse it! A Bible may be used as a step stool to elevate one to a better height to obtain an object out of reach, but that is not its purpose. A Bible may be used as a door stop to hold open a door so that others may pass through to the other side, but that is not its purpose. The purpose of the Bible is to tell of a story of God’s uncompromising, unyielding love for man and His unswerving willingness to pay the ultimate price to win man back unto Himself. It is intended to be read by all to transform lives and to spread the "Good News" that man, who had once fallen, can get back up again and be restored back to his place in God; that’s its purpose!
