Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The world is full of narcissists. People think what they’re doing is important, but researchers and helping professionals are finding that the incidence of narcissistic personality disorder has more than doubled in the last ten years.
#2
The term narcissism is used to describe a pattern of grandiosity, a lack of empathy, and a constant need for admiration. However, what people miss is that every level of severity in this diagnosis is underpinned by shame.
#3
We must understand the patterns of behaviors that lead to narcissism, but we must also understand that those patterns are caused by the fear of being ordinary. We must understand that we are all vulnerable to the messages that drive these behaviors.
#4
The environment that is shaping our culture right now is the culture of scarcity. It explains why we’re seeing so many people with narcissistic personality disorder, and it provides a clear view of the thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that are changing who we are and how we live.
#5
We live in a culture where everything feels limited or lacking. We spend a lot of time calculating how much we have, want, and don’t have, and how much everyone else has, wants, and needs.
#6
Scarcity thrives in shame-based cultures that are steeped in comparison and fractured by disengagement. It’s not just the larger culture that’s suffering, but family, work, school, and community cultures as well.
#7
To overcome the culture of scarcity, we must be willing to be vulnerable and engage with the world from a place of worthiness. We must stop believing the myths that fuel scarcity, and instead, believe the myths that fuel courage.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
The most widely accepted myth about vulnerability is that it is a weakness. In reality, vulnerability is the core of all emotions, and to believe that feeling is a weakness is to believe that life has no purpose or meaning.
#2
We have to learn how to own and engage with our vulnerability and feel the emotions that come with it. It’s taking off the mask and hoping the real me isn’t too disappointing.
#3
Vulnerability is like being naked onstage and hoping for applause rather than laughter. It is being naked when everyone else is fully clothed. It feels like the naked dream: you’re in the airport and you’re stark naked.
#4
We love seeing raw truth and openness in others, but we are afraid to let others see it in us.
