Dr. Laura Riley
Life is an exciting whirlwind for Dr. Laura Riley, who is an author, the medical director of labor and delivery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and a dedicated mom to daughters Natalie and Lauren. She is also associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Riley has been committed to serving pregnant women for more than 20 years. At Boston City Hospital she focused on high-risk pregnant women, with an emphasis on HIV disease. In 1995 she joined Massachusetts General Hospital, where she currently practices caring for women with high-risk pregnancies. Her research and publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals focus on HIV disease in pregnancy, immunization practices in obstetrics and gynecology, and the association of epidural analgesia and fever. Her administrative interests have led her to also focus on quality and efficiency of obstetric care.
A consultant to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Dr. Riley has been a member of several major committees at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), including chair of the Obstetric Practice Committee, which drafts guidelines for obstetric care in the United States, and an editor for Guidelines for Perinatal Care, 6th edition . She has been quoted extensively in national publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek , and The New York Times, and has appeared on NBC’s Today and CBS’s The Early Show . She serves as an expert for the scientific advisory boards of Woman’s Day and Parents magazines.
Dr. Riley is a graduate of Harvard University. She received her medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh, completed an internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Magee-Womens Hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and completed subspecialty training in maternal fetal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and in infectious disease at Boston University Medical Center.
Acknowledgments
I thank my children, Lauren and Natalie; my husband, Scott; my aunts; and my mother for their support and encouragement throughout this second edition of You and Your Baby: Pregnancy . My pregnancies, which were easy, my breastfeeding experiences, which were hard, and my obstetrician, whom I adored, have contributed immensely to my clinical practice and book. The content for this book also came in part from my experiences with many great women who had low-risk pregnancies, high-risk pregnancies, joyous outcomes, and sad ones. I thank all of my patients for sharing those experiences with me. In addition, many wonderful patients made suggestions for improvements and additions to the first publication of this book, which are reflected in this second edition.
I must again thank two very gifted writers, Alice Lesch Kelly and Holly Robinson, who helped me develop and refine the first edition. I also thank those extraordinary obstetricians, nurses, midwives, teachers, and colleagues whose collective wisdom is reflected here.
A special acknowledgment to Fredda Zuckerman, LICSW; Courtney Craig, RN; Amy Stagg, MD; Alana Chakrabarti, MD; Elizabeth Halfpapp, Core Fusion™ creator; and Denise Crowe, Catherine Marshall, and Kimberly Wallace, Core Fusion™ teachers, for their expert editorial contributions on new material in this edition.
Finally, I owe a special thanks to Dr. Carol Major, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, Irvine, and to Stacey Nelson, RDS, for their thorough review and invaluable input on this manuscript.
