Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy is the belief that a tumor between the killer’s thalamus, hypothalamus, and amygdala was the cause of the massacre. But even after the autopsy, the Connally Commission could not conclusively determine that the tumor was the reason for the killings.

#2

We are, as a nation, among the most violence-prone people on earth. We are also a technologically proficient people who are better equipped to kill and maim than most other nations.

#3

However, when an active shooter does get his hands on a semiautomatic rifle, the results are catastrophic. According to a 2018 report compiled by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, active shooters armed with any kind of semiautomatic rifle are likely to kill or wound nearly twice as many people as killers armed with firearms that fire off fewer rounds before needing to be reloaded.

#4

America is not the only country with a high rate of gun ownership, and we are not the only nation with a history of using guns to protect ourselves.

#5

The Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy is a concept used by statisticians to explain how easy it is to focus on a cluster of specific data points that support a particular, foregone conclusion while ignoring an equally significant number of data points that challenge it. It can be applied to one murderous sharpshooter in Texas.

#6

The diaries and writings of the Tower shooter, which urge us to examine his tumor, present a much less sympathetic picture of the killer. They paint a picture of a man with a streak of jealous misogyny, who was also abusively married.

#7

America has become a nation of people who crave notoriety. We no longer make the distinction between fame and greatness in our real, live communities, but instead want it in virtual communities online.

#8

The first mass shooting to be covered live coast to coast was the Tower shooting, which occurred just 34 months after Americans watched Jack Ruby shoot Lee Harvey Oswald, making us all witnesses to a homicide.

#9

The Isla Vista killer, for example, was motivated by his sense of victimhood to absolve himself of any wrongdoing. He felt that all women who rejected him and those who were sexually active were deserving of his anger and hatred.
