Description

This book presents information about live cell therapy which uses fetal precursor stem cell transplants prepared by the state-of-the-art primary tissue cultures. These precursor stem cells are from foetuses of rabbits coming from accredit closed colonies reared in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).

BIBILIOGRAPHY
FOREWORD
Stem cells and cell-based therapy are now among the hottest subjects which are proceeding at an increasingly exponential rate. lt is not surprising that the public is swarmed with a tsunami of information about these subjects thereby confronted with a lot of misinformation and truly misleading statements in the mass media. Research on stem cells and cell therapy attract enormous funds, but these usually go to support research on human cells, which include bone marrow derived stem cells, embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotential stem cells (iPSCs) and their derivatives, other adult human stem cells and cord blood stem cells. Notwithstanding, we still have a long way to go before safe and effective protocols using human stem cells can be ready for clinical use in patients with untreatable/no longer treatable diseases in conventional medicine’
Cell therapy is an old treatment modality which involves implantation of human or animal cells into human or animal for treatment of diseases. Professor Halim has undertaken clinical studies in this form of treatment based on a protocol that has been used for more than 80 years by reputable physicians. ln reality 99% of cell based therapy in the past involves the use of fetal stem cells of animal origin (stem cell xenotransplantation)and these were done without the use of immunosuppressive drugs. The literature index on the subject is voluminous. However only few articles on the subject appear in peer reviewed Anglophone journals. Therefore it is not surprising that many conventionally trained doctors are unfamiliar with the literature, let alone having witnessed the treatment being done or getting the opportunity to practice it. Regrettably not much funding goes to basic research to support cell based therapy using animal-derived stem cells. Extensive fundamental research works were done by earlier researchers and practitioners including Nobel prize laureates in the 20s century contributing many ground breaking research on stem cell xenotransplantation but regrettably basic research have not kept pace with therapy. Physicians using cell therapy are convinced that this is an effective form of therapy but much translational research is needed to take the knowledge and practice of cellular and molecular medicine to a higher level.

I am happy that Prof. Halim who is a consultant paediatrician has had the opportunity to practice and research live cell therapy for the past 10 years. He has made plenary and keynote presentations at international conferences and written books on the subject. This book is timely in view of the increasing interest in the use of this modality of treatment for treating medical conditions that are currently untreatable in conventional medicine. I hope many physicians and researchers will undertake more basic and applied research on the subject. I am confident that more publications on the subject will follow from this book.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I started working on this book after the successful distribution of my earlier book titled My Experience with Live Cell Therapy: A Dimension of Regenerative Medicine . Having completed the ten years of Malaysian case studies, we are in a position to give feedback regarding two issues—namely, the safety and the effectiveness of live cell therapy using fetal precursor stem cell xenotransplants, which are prepared by primary tissue cultures. These two issues were very much the concerns of the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. I have to firstly acknowledge the Ministry of Health for allowing me and my team to undertake this project, which is not only out of mainstream medicine but also a controversial form of treatment.
My heartfelt thanks to the many medical colleagues who have engaged me in serious discussions on this form of treatment. Their criticisms and comments have stimulated my thinking and kept me preoccupied with research to search for answers to the many questions that are still unresolved.
To my dear wife, for her understanding and sacrifice. I can only seek God’s blessing for her. My wife and children have also provided perceptive criticisms and comments. There were many difficulties encountered. Their love, understanding, and support have sustained me through everything.
The patients and parents have also been my source of inspiration and the driving force in my work. I have learned much from their experiences through conversations in the clinics, phone discussions, and e-mails. I am thankful for the pictures and video recordings, which are invaluable sources of research materials. With their kind permission, I have been able to show the effects of live cell therapy to medical colleagues, participant
