This book is dedicated to
My closest companions in this journey of life: my family. My dad and mom, Claude and Judy Hall, provided the support I needed to become a lover of learning and a pursuer of dreams. Thank you for displaying appropriate portions of mercy and strength in my life. My daughter, Sydney, inspires me with her intelligence and determination. My sons, Davis and Dean, remind me that life is full of fun, if you just know where to look. Finally, my wife, Holly, is the best person I know–by far. I thank God that He gave her a double portion of patience that has allowed her to endure my wild pursuits, including the fanatical notion of writing a book. She continues to believe in me, encourage me, and stay up late at night dreaming dreams with me. Without her love and support, I would not have written this book.
Chad
My best friend and the love of my life (other than Jesus Christ), my husband Don. You have always believed in me, stretched me in my own beliefs, and encouraged me, even when neither of us knew what would be ahead. I consider you to be a gift from God. I love you.
My daughters, Niki and Krista. It has been a privilege and a blessing to watch you grow into beautiful young women. My prayer for you has always been and will always be the words of verse 4 in 3 John: “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”
Several special friends who are also family: My mother and brother, who teach me so much, and Terri, who has become such a good friend. What a testament to the truth that new life comes out of death. You have given me a fresh perspective on life.

Acknowledgments
Life really is a journey. The leg of our journey culminating in publication of this book has involved many dear friends, prized mentors, and wonderful supporters. Allow us to invest a few paragraphs giving credit where it is so deserved.
Ultimate credit goes to the Subject of much of this book: the God who has revealed Himself in Jesus Christ and continues to bless the world through the working of His Holy Spirit. Our prayer is that this book contributes to the Lord’s will that things on earth will resemble things in heaven.
To those pioneers who introduced me to the world of coaching, I am forever grateful. Jane Creswell, George Bullard, and Don Bouldin demonstrated vision and generosity in offering training, mentoring, and that most cherished of gifts: opportunity. I would not be a coach if not for them.
My coaching colleagues at Valwood Christian Leadership Coaching and the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina gave me room to discover, develop, and deliver new insights in coaching. They also granted me the key to growth: permission to mess up. Colleagues such as Eddie Hammett, David Moore, John Jones, and Rick Hughes have been colearners and partners in exploring how coaching can serve the world of ministry. Along with Kim Duncan, they have been willing to adjust training schedules, tweak workshop agendas, and scrap PowerPoint presentations to experiment with my latest venture in seeing if a new idea would fly or flop.
Chad
To my Blanchard colleagues and friends–what a fabulous experience it has been to work with all of you! Thanks to Madeleine Homan, my thought partner who pushes me to continue growing, and to Joni Wickline, Patricia Overland, Mary Ellen Sailer, and Adam Morris, all of whom I consider good friends as well as partners inside Blanchard. And, hats off to Scott Blanchard who had the vision of bringing coaching into The Ken Blanchard Companies!
Special thanks to my dear friend and partner in creating and launching the coaching curriculum at Western Seminary, Jane Creswell, and to the leaders and students who have worked hard with us in the past years. I so appreciate Dr. Norm Thiesen, director and professor of record for the coaching program; Steve Thomas, director of enrollment management; and Dr. Bert Downs, president at Western Seminary, who saw the possibilities for coaching and had the courage to step out in faith. What a blessing it has been to partner with you to launch coaching in a seminary setting.
Linda
A very special thanks to our writing companion, Margaret “Grit” Dempsey. Margaret has become a good friend as she adeptly navigated us through this project, serving us as editor, organizer, translator, and encourager. In so many ways, she “coached” us through the process of writing this book, a new endeavor for both of us. Her intelligence, insight, diligence, redirection (when needed!), and humor have served us well. Margaret, you have been a precious gift from God.
We also want to thank Amy Weeda, who did research for us, or anything else that we asked. Thank you for your quick responses, commitment to us, firm foundation in the Lord, and attention to details.
To our ministry partners at The Columbia Partnership who are visionaries and who are willing to see the power and effectiveness of coaching, thank you for challenging us to keep expanding and seeking the Lord in our ministries. Thank you for believing in us to represent coaching well.
And thanks to the inspirational pastors who have participated in the Sustaining Pastoral Excellence (SPE) grant. You have been a blessing to each of us as we have walked beside you. May you experience God’s presence as you serve Him daily.
And, finally, to the hundreds of persons who have allowed us to train and/or coach them. You have taught us so much a
