ANCIENT GREECE
Today Greece is a European country, made up of the mainland and over 2,000 islands. In ancient Greece, the area wasn’t a country but a collection of individual settlements that gradually grew into city states. Some of these were outside the area we know as Greece today. Each community had a very strong sense of identity.
This satellite photo shows the areas of ancient Greece. Greek civilization covered a wide area, including parts of modern-day Turkey.
