Description

Vlado Rahal, Ph.D., a theoretical physicist and former atheist, shares insights on what led him to reexamine his view of the world.
Vlado Rahal, Ph.D., began his search for the meaning of life early on, asking himself questions like “Who am I?” As time went on, the need to find an answer took priority in his life.
As a teenager, he felt that all the explanations he had been given were not sufficient to help him gain a contradiction-free understanding of existence. At age seventeen, he began studying physics and mathematics, believing back then that the most fundamental natural science should provide the answers he was seeking.
He thought that if he understood general relativity, space, time, cosmology, and the big bang—and if he understood how the visible universe came into being and how it evolved—then he might be able to arrive at a better understanding of how we came into existence, how it all happened in the first place, and why.
He went on to earn numerous degrees, including a Ph.D. in theoretical physics, and thought he found the answers he sought—and he embraced atheism. But when his atheist worldview could no longer be reconciled with what he was experiencing in life, he was left once again searching for answers. This book shares some of the insights he gleaned on his journey.

About the Author
A Merchant on the Silk Road
Let no young man delay the study of philosophy, and let no old man become weary of it; for it is never too early or too late to care for the well-being of the soul.
— Epicurus (341–270 BCE)
L isten to the story of the merchant who was journeying east along the Silk Road long ago. He was attacked in a rugged and lonely mountain pass by a band of robbers who stripped him of all his garments and belongings, leaving him unconscious to die. As he came back to himself, he realized that he had suffered complete memory loss. He knew not where he was coming from or going to; he could not even remember his name. Passing nomads who found him and took pity helped him recover from his injuries and offered to make him one of their own. He dwelt among them for many years, sleeping under the stars and enjoying a peaceful and idyllic life.
Although the man had lost his memory, he had not lost the reason in his mind or the love in his heart. Reason’s voice kept telling him he must have a home somewhere, although he did not have the slightest inkling about how and where to begin his search, how long it could take, or whether there was a chance of succeeding. Added to this, Love’s voice advised him that he might well have a wife and young children who could have fallen into the clutches of poverty and despair as a result of his prolonged absence and who might be scanning the horizon every evening in the hope of seeing their father and beloved husband return. Thus did the voices of Reason and Love incessantly speak to him in his mind.
The voices of Doubt and Fear, however, held him back, warning him there was no guarantee he’d find anything he’d lost or anyone dear to him. They spoke to him of the dangers he would face should he embark on another journey. His memory loss had made the world a very alien and threatening realm. But one morning when he awoke, he realized that the voices of Reason and Love had overpowered Doubt and Fear. He renounced the secure life he had grown accustomed to and went roaming the earth in search of his home and identity. He said to himself, I will not look back, and I will not swerve. I will stay the course, no matter what happens even if I have to give up my life in the process or even if I must spend all of it on my search. But I will not waver, nor will I stop seeking, until I have found. And find he did. For one day he walked into his village and saw his house and family, and suddenly, he remembered. He found his real life again.
To Real Being we go back, all that we have and are; to that we return as from that we came.
— Plotinus (c. 205–270 CE)
( The Enneads, tr. Stephen MacKenna, London: Faber and Faber Ltd., 1956)
The Enchanting Temple
I visited the temple and found it richly adorned with a number of offerings, among which were two pillars, one of pure gold; the other of emerald, shining with great brilliancy at n ight.
— Herodotus (c. 485–425 BCE)
H ere is the enchanting temple of light that Ha-Meno-Thot, the high priest and ruler of Atlantis, ordered to be built for his only son in the wondrous days of antiquity. It was the father’s gift to his beloved child, and it counted as one of the world wonders of its days. The main hall was a large space in which one thousand transparent and crystalline columns stood, all radiating pure bright light. The hall was empty otherwise, for in it, everything was given and, therefore, nothing was lacking.
Whosoever entered became enchanted by the heavenly music and enthralled by the wonderful light. One’s whole being became immersed in warmth, all fear disappeared, all needs and lacks evaporated, bodily pain and gravity were lifted, time disappeared from consciousness, bliss and ecstasy gripped the mind, and no trace of awareness of a physical location in space was left. Nothing other than a loving light enveloped and shielded the visitor.
The festivities for the gods of light would take place once a year. On that day, access would be granted to all those wishing to enter the columned hall. They would walk in but could not bring themselves to leave. The temple ushers had to gently lead them out while reminding them of their worldly duties. For no one had ever experienced such a thing, and the experience kept the visitor spellbound to the present state and made him or her forget all past and future earthly thoughts and worries. No one would even think about leaving, for the impulse to strive was just not there anymore. Each visitor found there what he or she was always looking for, although no visitor knew beforehand what was missing in order to feel perfectly well and whole. It was simply not of this world. It was unheard of; no one in this world had ever imagined such a thing. But the High Priest had invoked the gods he loved, and they had answered him favorably and offered him this gift to give to his son. The Titans of Eternity were sent down from their heavenly abode to lend a helping hand in the construction of the temple.
After many years, the wish for meaninglessness and nothingness arose in Atlantis. Error and self-deception were sought after and became highly coveted. The gods of unconditional love, giving, and freedom adored by the ancestors were abandoned, and idolatry of fear, sacrifice, and ritual spread all over the land.
One day, mighty volcanoes erupted under the sea and powerful earthquakes shook the continent’s foundations. Fire and ash filled the streets, palaces crumbled, houses were leveled, and large parts of Atlantis sank under the sea. But the Temple of Light remained as it was. Yet no one knew whether it still existed, for it was covered with brimstone, filled with dust, and hidden from sight. The light of its columns could no longer be seen, nor could its gift be made manifest.
Centuries later, a prince from Ha-Meno-Thot’s lineage who had heard many stories about the temple as a child decided to mount an unprecedented expedition to search for it. He resolved to go beyond what everyone else had attempted before. He and the men with him sought, and they fou
