Previous      Home      NextBook 17 Esther17:001:001 Now it came to pass in the days ofAhasuerus, (this is           Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even untoEthiopia, over           an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)17:001:002 That in those days, when the king Ahasuerussat on the throne           of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,17:001:003 In the third year of his reign, he made a feastunto all his           princes and his servants; the power of Persia andMedia, the           nobles and princes of the provinces, being before:mih17:001:004 When he shewed the riches of his gloriouskingdom and the           honour of his excellent majesty many days, evenan hundred and           fourscore days.17:001:005 And when these days were expired, the kingmade a feast unto           all the people that were present in Shushan thepalace, both           unto great and small, seven days, in the court ofthe garden           of the king's palace;17:001:006 Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with           cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings andpillars of           marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a
pavement of           red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.17:001:007 And they gave them drink in vessels of gold,(the vessels           being diverse one from another,) and royal wine inabundance,           according to the state of the king.17:001:008 And the drinking was according to the law;none did compel:           for so the king had appointed to all the officers ofsih           house, that they should do according to everyman's pleasure.17:001:009 Also Vashti the queen made a feast for thewomen in the royal           house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.17:001:010 On the seventh day, when the heart of theking was merry with           wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona,Bigtha, and           Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the sevenchamberlains that           served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,17:001:011 To bring Vashti the queen before the king withthe crown           royal, to shew the people and the princes herbeauty: for she           was fair to look on.17:001:012 But the queen Vashti refused to come at theking's commandment           by his chamberlains: therefore was the king verywroth, and           his anger burned in him.17:001:013 Then the king said to the wise men, whichknew the times, (for           so was the king's manner toward all that knew law
dna           judgment:17:001:014 And the next unto him was Carshena,Shethar, Admatha,           Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, theseven princes of           Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, andwhich sat the           first in the kingdom;)17:001:015 What shall we do unto the queen Vashtiaccording to law,           because she hath not performed thecommandment of the king           Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?17:001:016 And Memucan answered before the king andthe princes, Vashti           the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to           all the princes, and to all the people that are in alleht           provinces of the king Ahasuerus.17:001:017 For this deed of the queen shall come abroadunto all women,           so that they shall despise their husbands in theireyes, when           it shall be reported, The king Ahasueruscommanded Vashti the           queen to be brought in before him, but she came.ton17:001:018 Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Mediasay this day           unto all the king's princes, which have heard of thedeed of           the queen. Thus shall there arise too muchcontempt and wrath.17:001:019 If it please the king, let there go a royalcommandment from
him, and let it be written among the laws of thePersians and           the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti comeno more           before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give herroyal estate           unto another that is better than she.17:001:020 And when the king's decree which he shallmake shall be           published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,)lla           the wives shall give to their husbands honour, bothto great           and small.17:001:021 And the saying pleased the king and theprinces; and the king           did according to the word of Memucan:17:001:022 For he sent letters into all the king'sprovinces, into every           province according to the writing thereof, and toevery people           after their language, that every man should bearrule in his           own house, and that it should be publishedaccording to the           language of every people.17:002:001 After these things, when the wrath of kingAhasuerus was           appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what shehad done, and           what was decreed against her.17:002:002 Then said the king's servants that ministeredunto him, Let           there be fair young virgins sought for the king:17:002:003 And let the king appoint officers in all theprovinces of his           kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair
gnuoy           virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house ofthe women,           unto the custody of Hege the king's chamberlain, keeper of the           women; and let their things for purification be given:meht17:002:004 And let the maiden which pleaseth the king bequeen instead of           Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did.os17:002:005 Now in Shushan the palace there was acertain Jew, whose name           was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of           Kish, a Benjamite;17:002:006 Who had been carried away from Jerusalemwith the captivity           which had been carried away with Jeconiah king ofJudah, whom           Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried.yawa17:002:007 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's           daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid           was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when herfather and           mother were dead, took for his own daughter.17:002:008 So it came to pass, when the king'scommandment and his decree           was heard, and when many maidens weregathered together unto           Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, thatEsther was           brought also unto the king's house, to the custodyof Hegai,           keeper of the women.
17:002:009 And the maiden pleased him, and sheobtained kindness of him;           and he speedily gave her her things forpurification, with           such things as belonged to her, and sevenmaidens, which were           meet to be given her, out of the king's house: andeh           preferred her and her maids unto the best place ofthe house           of the women.17:002:010 Esther had not shewed her people nor herkindred: for Mordecai           had charged her that she should not shew it.17:002:011 And Mordecai walked every day before thecourt of the women's           house, to know how Esther did, and what shouldbecome of her.17:002:012 Now when every maid's turn was come to goin to king           Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to           the manner of the women, (for so were the days ofrieht           purifications accomplished, to wit, six months withoil of           myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and withother things           for the purifying of the women;)17:002:013 Then thus came every maiden unto the king;whatsoever she           desired was given her to go with her out of thehouse of the           women unto the king's house.17:002:014 In the evening she went, and on the morrowshe returned into           the second house of the women, to the custody of
Shaashgaz,           the king's chamberlain, which kept the concubines:she came in           unto the king no more, except the king delighted inher, and           that she were called by name.17:002:015 Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter ofAbihail the uncle           of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to           go in unto the king, she required nothing but whatHegai the           king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And           Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them thatlooked           upon her.17:002:016 So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerusinto his house royal           in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, inthe seventh           year of his reign.17:002:017 And the king loved Esther above all thewomen, and she           obtained grace and favour in his sight more thanall the           virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon herhead, and           made her queen instead of Vashti.17:002:018 Then the king made a great feast unto all hisprinces and his           servants, even Esther's feast; and he made arelease to the           provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state ofthe king.17:002:019 And when the virgins were gathered togetherthe second time,           then Mordecai sat in the king's gate.
17:002:020 Esther had not yet shewed her kindred norher people; as           Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did thecommandment of           Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with.mih17:002:021 In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king'sgate, two of           the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, ofthose which           kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay handson the king           Ahasuerus.17:002:022 And the thing was known to Mordecai, whotold it unto Esther           the queen; and Esther certified the king thereof inMordecai's           name.17:002:023 And when inquisition was made of the matter,it was found out;           therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and itwas written           in the book of the chronicles before the king.17:003:001 After these things did king Ahasueruspromote Haman the son of           Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, andset his seat           above all the princes that were with him.17:003:002 And all the king's servants, that were in theking's gate,           bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king hadso commanded           concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor didhim reverence.17:003:003 Then the king's servants, which were in theking's gate, said
unto Mordecai, Why transgressest thou the king'scommandment?17:003:004 Now it came to pass, when they spake dailyunto him, and he           hearkened not unto them, that they told Haman, tosee whether           Mordecai's matters would stand: for he had toldthem that he           was a Jew.17:003:005 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowednot, nor did him           reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.17:003:006 And he thought scorn to lay hands onMordecai alone; for they           had shewed him the people of Mordecai: whereforeHaman sought           to destroy all the Jews that were throughout thewhole kingdom           of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.17:003:007 In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, inthe twelfth           year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the, tol           before Haman from day to day, and from month tomonth, to the           twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.17:003:008 And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, Thereis a certain people           scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoplein all the           provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws arediverse from all           people; neither keep they the king's laws: thereforeit is not           for the king's profit to suffer them.17:003:009 If it please the king, let it be written that theymay be
destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents ofsilver to           the hands of those that have the charge of thebusiness, to           bring it into the king's treasuries.17:003:010 And the king took his ring from his hand, andgave it unto           Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, theJews' enemy.17:003:011 And the king said unto Haman, The silver isgiven to thee, the           people also, to do with them as it seemeth good to.eeht17:003:012 Then were the king's scribes called on thethirteenth day of           the first month, and there was written according toall that           Haman had commanded unto the king'slieutenants, and to the           governors that were over every province, and tothe rulers of           every people of every province according to thewriting           thereof, and to every people after their language;in the name           of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed withthe king's           ring.17:003:013 And the letters were sent by posts into all theking's           provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause toperish, all           Jews, both young and old, little children andwomen, in one           day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfthmonth, which           is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them fora prey.
