Utilities are accelerating deployment of large telecom networks for voice and data using a variety of technologies and architectures, and are seeking benchmarking data to identify standards, which can be used to measure capital and operating expenditures for deployment and operation of telecommunications systems. “The objective of this very important study is to identify existing capabilities, internal cost structures and capital spending plans for utilities’ enterprise communications systems,” said Beth Griffiths, UTC Director of Research. “The UTC Utility Telecom Benchmarking Report will be the first broad-reaching benchmarking study on internal telecommunications for the North American utilities industry.” ...

Utilities are accelerating deployment of large telecom networks for voice and data using a variety of technologies and architectures, and are seeking benchmarking data to identify standards, which can be used to measure capital and operating expenditures for deployment and operation of telecommunications systems. “The objective of this very important study is to identify existing capabilities, internal cost structures and capital spending plans for utilities’ enterprise communications systems,” said Beth Griffiths, UTC Director of Research.“The UTC Utility Telecom Benchmarking Report will be the first broad-reaching benchmarking study on internal telecommunications for the North American utilities industry.” Telcordia will work with UTC to develop a study to understand and benchmark the internal enterprise telecom needs of electric and gas utilities. The study will specifically benchmark: Examples of network architectures and internal communications systems deployed by UTC Members; The costs associated with major network components and software systems; Overall operational expenses; Communications evolution strategies or plans for network upgrades; The relationships between enterprise communications, retail/wholesale offerings and parent utility companies; and Capital spending plans and priorities. “Utilities play an increasingly critical role in our nation’s communications infrastructure,” said Howard Reis, Vice President of the North American Market for Telcordia Professional Services."By better understanding the state-of-the-art technology today, utilities can make better decisions about tomorrow's network architectures in terms of costs, potential applications and security requirements." Additionally, through analysis of secondary market research, interviews with Telcordia Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and input from UTC, the study will identify key technology trends, business issues and operational criteria applicable to utility-based enterprise telecom organizations, focusing on the internal voice, video, data, wireless and SCADA requirements of utility, pipeline and infrastructure companies. The study will seek to ascertain the current state of technology infrastructures, operational costs and capital spending plans of the UTC’s electric and gas utility members. The report will be available for delivery in December 2002. 1901 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW FifthFloor  Washington,DC 20006 USA 1.202.872.0030  Fax: 1.202.872.1331  www.utc.org
