In contemporary society, family is considered to be its most important component and from the viewpoint of the Catholic Church it is a vital cell of the society and the first natural community. Social and political changes that took place in the 20th century and that showed the relativity of many social relationships created conditions for diversification of broad understanding of a family, which loses common and clear criteria of defining the essence and concept of the family, as well as determines diffusion and spreading the uncertainty of family values. Various destructive processes that take place in the world, such as violent conflicts, crisis, unemployment, poverty, and violence, directly influence the stability and welfare of a family. Many family members, when they lose their job or when they have fewer possibilities to fulfil social or educational needs, change habitual residence, leave for abroad. As a result, a family, especially a new family, faces more challenges. "Family is an essential good of the community, which arises from human nature and is based on voluntary promise between a man and a woman to devote one's life for a creation of family relationship that ensures man's, woman's, children's and future generations' welfare and development of healthy society as well as liveliness and creativity of the nation and country. Therefore, governmental and non-governmental institutions have to ensure an environment favourable to family integrity by developing and improving its legal and social base.
Fifty years ago, concepts of family and marriage in spoken language of Lithuanians were so closely related that it was almost impossible to imagine one without the other. However, at the end of 20thcentury and at the beginning of 21stcentury, amalgamation of the two concepts has become a doubtful thing. Consideration of the family conception, legally bonding the concepts of family and marriage, initiated by the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania, introduced distinct opinions of the society. As the characteristics of a traditional family is fading, people are getting married at the older age, the number of marriages is decreasing, the number of nonregistered marriages, divorces and natural children is increasing (see Table 1). The analysed themes often include demography (Kanopien, 1995, 2000; Jasilionis, 2002; Jonkartyt, 2003; Mikulionien, 2003; Stanknien, 2003; Purvaneckien, 1995; Addis, 2002; Abramson, 1995; Ekert-Jafe (2001), Hoffman, 2004), the tendency of stability and change in the family institution (Bajorinas, 1989, 1997, 2008; Barkauskait, 2000; Bitinas, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2006;Černius, 1992; Juodaityt 2002; Kvieskien, 2003, 2005; Leliugien, 1997. Rupien, 2001; Danilevičius, 2007; Vikat, 1994; Belardienli, 2000; Erikson, 2004), the reflection of family institution in legal documents (Lazutka, 2001; Gruevskis, 2000; alkauskien, 1998; alimien, 2000; Norris, 1999) and the influence in teaching the new generation (Jovaia, 1993, 1997, 2003; Aramavičit, 1998,
2006; P. Jucevičien, 1997; Gaigalien, 1998, 2000, 2001; Navaitis, 1990, 1997, 1999; Mikinis, 1993, 2003; viklien, 1990, 1991). One of the first researches in the sphere of the analysis of family and demographic processes was a comprehensive international study Family and Birth rate carried out at the Lithuanian Institute of Philosophy and Sociology in 1995. Specific features of this study allowed to identify individuals life events according to biography, starting with evaluation of parents home and some other events (family stability, number of children) and later on recording other individuals life events. This research also studied peoples attitude towards value orientation, procreational and migratory behaviour, as well as evaluated demand for family politics. Our researches are related to the process of preparation for family institution and its influence on young peoples decision. According to professor Juozas Vaitkevičius (1995), under conditions of open society and rapidly changing social life, modern family becomes open and complicated. Many personal and social problems of family members meet in a family. These problems include biological, economical, cultural, political, ideological-spiritual problems that directly affect each family member, group and society, in which this family lives. Therefore nowadays many sciences, including philosophy, sociology, ethics, psychology, pedagogy, economics, law etc., try to analyse and solve family problems. A new scientific branch  social pedagogy  takes an important place among these sciences. Its extremely important when solving one of the sorest problems of all times, i.e. questions related to human socialization, education of young generation in family, family stability, inner listening among family members, mutual understanding. Our researches justify the fact that in such situations Catholic Church, as the most influential religious confession in Lithuania, can help those people who cannot get a handle on a variety of values and those whose position of values is still in the stage of formation. While analysing and introducing the Christian position towards marriage such people  youth solemnly preparing for marriage and Church, its servants or other individuals accepting position of Church  can help youth to form such moral grounds and values that would help not to lose oneself among many different attitudes towards marriage and to form unique and strong (both morally and psychologically) position. Preparation of youth for the Christian (in Lithuanian case for Catholic) family while providing them knowledge, helping to form positions of values and behavioural models, nowadays is the most justified way both due to its historical an theoretical consistency of Christian position and due to the current authority of the Catholic Church in Lithuanian society. The study Family Policy, prepared by scientists at the Lithuanian Institute of Philosophy and Sociology in 2001, discusses theoretical basis of family policy, analyses international documents aimed at solving family problems, evaluates experience of Lithuania and other countries in this sphere. It provides detailed review of

Fig. 1. Conferment of the Sacrament of Marriage at St. Peter and St. Paul's Church Similar tendencies are seen also in churches of other parishes. Thus in order to show that the Church is tolerant and capable to adjust to the changed conditions, it is important to improve preparation of the engaged couple for a marriage, and to analyse the process of preparation of the engaged couple for a Catholic marriage in detail. Theoretical relevance of the problem. The problems faced while preparing the youth for a marriage are analysed in the USA, Australia, Canada and other countries. In publications, the initial stage of the preparation for the marriage is depicted (Barbant et al., 1992; Rassel et al., 1992), the situation of the preparation for the marriage in various countries is described (Clinton, 2003; Parker, 2007), factors that influence the preparation for the marriage are presented (Duncan et al., 2007; Ooms et al., 2004), as well as various opinions about the process of preparation are analysed (Goddard et all., 2004; Parrott et al., 2003; Ponzetti et all., 2006).In Lithuania, the Church together with Family centers of archdioceses are improving a non-formal education program for the preparation of the couple for the marriage (subsequently PPCM). It is stated in Lithuanian Bishop Conference reccomendations on the preparation for implementation (2006) of the program of the Sacrament of marriage that a couple that wants to get married in a church, register in the parish where they want to have the ceremony and they are sent to the courses of preparation to the Sacrament of marriage. The purpose of the courses is to introduce the couple to the teaching of the Church about marriage, family and sexuality, family planning and life with psychological, social and medical principles, to create suitable conditions for the couple to get to know each other better before they make this important decision. The content of PPCM includes theoretical lessons and practical part with both individual and group asignments. The main part of the program is dedicated to strengthen mutual understanding and to improve the culture of mutual relationship. The preparation for the marriage is provided by
