Description
This study is concerned with Evolutionary Morphology of a number of characters identifiable on the exocranium of robust Australopithecines (Australopithecus boisie) notably KNM ER 406 and OH 5. Two major character sub-sets are distinguished in the cranium : an anterior (fronto- facial) sub-set and a posterior (cranio-cerebral) sub-set. Both from the point of view of evolutionary change and from the point of view of individual morphogenesis, the fronto-facial sub-set is dominated by the reduction in size of the facial region and the hyper-development of the masticatory apparatus. The cranio-cerebral sub-set by contrast, is dominated by the expansion of telencephalon, accompanied by marked « externation » of the parieto-occipital and cerebellar regions of the skull, which accounts for the structural peculiarities of the posterior pole of the skull (Sakka, 1974). The conflict between these two opposing trends is resolved by a predominance of masticatory adaptations over the effects of télencéphalisation in the robust australopithecines. Given the link between télencéphalisation and socio-cultural developments, it is possible to advance a number of hypotheses regarding the particular condition of the robust australopithecines human evolution.
