HoW SAFE ARE YoU? Imagine walking alone through a strange city. How safe would you feel? You would probably be a little nervous. You know that the city is huge, and you are not really sure where you are. There are certainly lots of great things to do in the city, but you need to be careful about which people you talk to. You also need to make sure you do not end up in a dangerous neighbourhood. By comparison, the Internet might seem like a much more friendly place. All of your friends are there. You can chat online and make contact with people from around the world, play games, listen to music, go shopping, and find almost any kind of information you need.
Although the Internet brings huge benefits to our lives, in many ways it can be just as scary as an unknown city. The Internet connects you to everyone around the world, which also means that almost anyone from around the world could connect to you. Some of these people use the Internet to hurt others and commit crimes.
The Internet gives these criminals access to the information – including your personal information – they need to commit crimes. It also enables them to take on whatever online identity they want, which helps them to avoid being caught.
“It is clear life has changed – the Internet has affected people’s lives in many new ways and we don’t know where this is headed … This is a very important, very complex issue for society that is going to be debated for the next 50 years.” Larry Page, co-founder of Google, May 2010, quoted in The Guardian
