Perspectives on Translation and Interpretation in Cameroon is the first volume of a book series of the Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters (ASTI) of the University of Buea. It opens a window into the wide dynamic and interesting area of translation and interpretation in a multilingual Cameroon that had on the eve of independence and unification opted for official bilingualism in French and English. The book comprises contributions from scholars of translation in the broad area of translation, comprising: the concept of translation and its pedagogy, the history of translation and, the state of the art of translation as a discipline, profession and practice. The book also focuses on acquisition of translation competences through training, and chronicles the history of translation in Cameroon through the contributions of both Cameroonian and European actors from the German through the French and English colonial periods to the postcolonial present in their minutia. Rich, original and comprehensive, the book is a timely and invaluable contribution to the growing community of translators and interpreters in Africa and globally.

Notes on Contributors

Professor Chia Emmanuel N.is a Professor of Linguisitcs and Translation Studies at the University of Buea He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Georgetown, a Diploma in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Georgetown, Washington, DC. He teaches and researches in General Linguistics, Socio-linguistics, Applied Linguistics and African Linguistics. He has over 25 years of teaching and research at the tertiary level including more than 15 years of experience at different levels of University management.

Dr Suh Joseph Chean Associate Professor of Translation is Studies, Terminology and Comparative Stylistics at the University of Buea. He holds a DLitt et Phil in Linguistics (Translation Studies) from the University of South Africa (UNISA), an MA in Translation from the Universtiy of Ottawa, Canada and a DEA in Traductologie from ESIT, Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris III, France. His research interests include Literary Translation, Translation Pedagogy, Terminology, Comparative Stylistics, Translation from/ into African Languages and History of Translation.

Dr Atangana Nama Charles(Ph.D., Binghamton, State University of New York, 1984), deceased, is the former Director of the Advanced School of Translation and Interpretation in Cameroon. In 1986, he was recruited as Administrative Assistant and part-time lecturer at ASTI. He was appointed Acting Secretary- General in ASTI until 1988. From 1989 to 1993, he was Chief of Service in charge of Planning and University Guidance at Buea University Centre. From 1993 to 1998, he was Acting Head of Admissions and Records of the newly created University of Buea. On January 27, 1999, he was appointed Director of ASTI, a position he held until February 19, 2006. His research interest included History of Translation and Literary Translation.

Dr Aroga Bessong Dieudonnéis the Director of The Bible Society of Cameroon. He joined his new office after having served in the Public Service as a Translator for over ten years. He holds a PhD and an MA in Translation Studies from the University of Ottawa, Canada. His research interests include Bible Translation and Cultural Transfer in Translation.

Dr Kr uger Jan Louisthe School ofis the Director of Languages, Northwest University, Vaal Triangle Campus, Vanderbijlpark, South Africa. He is a Senior Lecturer of English and Language Practice (Translation Studies). His teaching and research interests are in the area of Subtitles, Translation theory and narrative theory. Some of his major publications have been in the area of translation training and language promotion; parameters for the training of subtitlers and challenges for developing countries; subtitling and empowerment of African languages on television; and subtitled popular television as a tool in academic language proficiency programmes. He is a member of the Media Committee of the International Translators’ Federation and of the South African Translators’ Institute.

Dr Ndeffo Tene AlexandreTranslation at theis a Lecturer of University of Buea. He holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the Saarland University, Germany, a DESS in Translation from ESIT, Paris III, France, and a Maîtrise in German Studies from the University of Yaoundé. His research interests include Literary Translation, Translation and Culture, Translation Pedagogy, Translation Quality Assessment, Postcolonial Literature, Writing in Foreign Languages, Writing in Exile.

Mr Tiayon Charlesis a Lecturer of Translation at the University of Buea. He holds a DEA in Traductologie from ESIT, Paris III, an MA in Terminology from the University of Birmingham, UK, and a Maîtrise in English Language from the University of Yaoundé. His research interests include Corpus Translation Studies, Translation Pedagogy, Terminology and Translation from/into African Languages.
